According to KREN CW NEWS, Star Trek movie director J.J. Abrams discussed the Kirk/Spock relationship at a Television Critics Association panel, saying, "We never saw how Kirk and Spock became so connected, and this movie [reveals that]."
More from Abrams can be found here.
Abrams also told E! Online "Zachary [Quinto] brought a gravity and an incredible sense of humor, which is a wonderful combination because the Spock character is deceivingly complicated. And the revelation for me in watching the movie was that he's extraordinary. He was doing things I didn't even realize while we were shooting. These amazing things that sort of track the story."
