Aint It Cool News' Harry Knowles Reports on First Star Trek Movie Footage - Major Spoilers

Features

By GustavoLeao / 05:16, 27 June 2008 / Feature Films

Aint It Cool News' Harry Knowles posted a sneak peek preview of a few scenes of J.J. Abrams new Star Trek movie. Here are a few excerpts of his article (beware of spoilers)

"He [Abrams] showed me a scene of Ben Cross (Sarek) & Winona Ryder (Amanda Grayson) cradling a baby Spock on the surface of Vulcan." Knowles wrote.

"The next scene was a really nicely completed visual effects pass of a pre-Enterprise Federation ship from about 25 years before the Enterprise. I've no idea how this fits into the larger story, same with the Spock baby stuff. But this effects shot had a completely different space feel than anything I've seen before from STAR TREK or STAR WARS. The shot began on a small part of the ship, then craned back and over to reveal the ship coming into a larger shot of the ship seemingly orbiting a really angry sun. The shot was absolutely dynamic as the star was seemingly raging - and we cut to the interior of the ship - it was very shadowy and very much like that of an old diesel submarine - JJ told me that the look was an evolving look for Star Fleet - so that you could get a sense of the passage of decades here.[...]"

"You'd see cadets running to meet their shuttles - and as shuttles filled up, they took off to take their crews to their respective starships. They hold on the long shot - we hear Leonard McCoy being assigned to the Enterprise - You catch Uhura being assigned to a place... not the Enterprise. You see Chris Pine as Kirk demanding to know why his name wasn't called out - apparently Kirk is in trouble.[...]"

"We see Uhura confront Spock regarding her assignment to NOT the Enterprise. Zoe Saldana doesn't look like the Uhura we knew - she looks young and hungry, confident and determined. And Spock... perfect."

"It all ended with characters arriving on the bridge, under the command of Captain Pike. Sulu was at the helm - and the bridge. And the uniforms... Classic Trek. Nice. Then for the first time in the history of Star Trek, it looked amazingly functional.[...]"

The real risk he took, IMO, was in divulging the quality of his work in progress to a potential critic.

I noticed that as well, and as a filmmaker myself it is always important that there is a "final product" that must be conveyed and that takes time. Eager fans also have to have patience, because it is amazing how different the raw footage looks from the final edited scene. Which makes what Robert Wise must have been feeling having to release The Motion Picture unfinished at the premiere and for the next 22 years before it was finally finished for the DVD release, that much more painful.

I think Mr. Knowles made it clear though, that this was obviously unfinished raw film and to take it with a grain of salt. I think it is just neat to get descriptions period. We have seen images of actors standing around at the academy, but nothing as descriptive as what we got in this post. Can't wait. :)

Quote from Harry Knowles:
I've no idea of what this is going to be, but I got a sense of what JJ is up to.

Whatever Knowles' critical judgement as a "Lapsed Trekkie", his description of incidental detail indicates that Abrams' production has made a sincere effort to be faithful to the spirit of TOS. This affirms remarks from James Cawley, Ron D. Moore, and several ST:XI actors.

Not one for major spoilers, sly Abrams' "Eureka" moment was to show Knowles some of the Starfleet Academy setting, which had been revealed online by spy photos months ago.

Jeffrey Jacob Abrams was born in 1966 on this day, June 27. Happy B'day, Mystery-Box Man.

Okay. I broke down and read this because Abrams himself sanctioned the leak. Hell, HE leaked it.

I'm glad I did. No one knows much about the quality of Abrams' approach and Knowles's first hand account gives me great optimism on at least the look and feel, the tone and gravitas of the film. I'm also glad to find out he's building sequences first, because transitions and pace are my favorite parts of films.

Okay, this is giving me goosebumps. This "new look" was certainly suggested by the trailer, and it has the potential to be great.

And I think the whole "diesel submarine" thing works, too. If you consider the look of the "Forbidden Planet" ship bridge, and then the look/feel of the Enterprise bridge from "The Cage," there's more than a hint of that.
