Brent Spiner Says Nemesis was a Really Emotional Ending for The Next Generation

Features

By GustavoLeao / 18:01, 23 June 2008 / Feature Films

DreamWatch Total SciFi just posted a new interview with Star Trek The Next Generation star Brent Spiner, in which he revealed he wanted Buffy actor James Marsters for the role of Shinzon in Star Trek Nemesis. "I like Spike. I wanted him to play Shinzon in Nemesis!" Spiner told the site. Here are few excerpts of the interview.

Were any of the actors emotional when Star Trek: The Next Generation filmed its last episode?

Michael Dorn was emotional. He was crying and kept spitting those fake teeth out...But the ‘ending-ending' really was Nemesis. That was really emotional.

Have you saved any of your Star Trek: The Next Generation costumes?

I was told I couldn't take anything, so I wore my visor home off the set of Next Generation and I did that with my costume from the last movie [Nemesis]. That's all I've taken. Why? Because I could!

You co-wrote Star Trek Nemesis. Do you want to direct?

The most important thing you need to be a director is boundless energy. And I love sleep. I was not willing to give up sleep to tell people what to do!

The full interview, in which also talks about Threshold and his upcoming projects, can be found here.

Spike sucks! Though in an effective way.

As seen from Buffy, Angel, and Smallville, James Marsters could've brought an evil charisma to Shinzon that would pale Tom Hardy's effort.

Entertainment Weekly just listed Star Trek: The Next Generation as the 24th greatest tv show in the past 25 years, just behind The West Wing and ahead of such shows as The Shield, 24, CSI, Deadwood, and Mad Men (Battlestar Galactica came in at 59).

There's even a full page tribute photo of Rainn Wilson dressed as Captain Picard...next to a full page photo of Rainn Wilson dressed as Xena.

Worth checking out, and deserves a mention on this site somewhere?

Well, much better than the awful Tom Hardy anyway...sigh...

Out of fairness to Hardy, I think his acting was fine. He conveyed the gritty, beaten, 'street-rat' personality perfectly. I think he just didn't LOOK like Patrick Stewart at all... his lips were too big!

After Nemesis I went straight from the theater to the bar. My childhood officially ended.

So true! I was 9 when I sat on the floor and watched Encounter at Farpoint with my mom for the first time. Then, 15 years later I am 24-years old, watching the midnight showing of Nemesis with some friends and feeling less-than-satisfied about how my beloved TNG run had come to and end... and I don't care what anyone said at the time, that movie was the end.

Emotional ending? I know what he means. After Nemesis I went straight from the theater to the bar. My childhood officially ended.

James Marsters as Shinzon would have been a really awesome casting for the movie.

Well, much better than the awful Tom Hardy anyway...sigh...

Before this becomes a huge controversy, I am pretty sure he meant his poker visor he wore as a dealer. Just to eliminate any Geordi-Data confusion ;)
