William Shatner Remembers His Days as Captain Kirk in The Original Series

By GustavoLeao / 16:45, 6 June 2008 / General Star Trek

Denver Post posted a new interview with Star Trek star William Shatner, in which he revealed that he recently watched the second season TOS episode "A Piece of the Action". Here are few excerpts.

"I haven't seen myself playing Capt. Kirk in a long, long time," he says. "And I watched it now, from my perspective of 40 years later, and I thought, 'You know, that's rather good.' It's a starship captain trying to do the accent, the Noo Yawk accent, trying to play tough, trying to be one of the guys. It's not quite right, but it's what a starship captain would have done - a decent imitation, enough to fool those guys but not the audience."

"The actors were wonderful. And I didn't care about the sets or anything like that or the cheesy spaceship," Shatner says. "I think that's what happens in 'Star Trek.' Your eye goes past all the faults because you're concentrated on the actors and the plot."

More from Shatner on the character of Kirk can be found here.

Shatner is correct- TOS has great story telling.
There was also some moral ambiguity in the stories. Look at "A Private Little War" where Kirk may have condemned a whole civilization to a long term war.
The morality plays became more and more bland and feel-good as new spinoffs emerged.DS9 luckily broke the mold and took some chances.
Battlestar Galactica is more the contemporary equivalent of TOS (judged by its time). Not afraid to take chances, with a good dose of social commentary.

Shatner's right that the appeal of Trek has always been the larger matters rather than the minutia of production. In that vein, he’s just a hair’s breath away from understanding that the appeal is due to the “concentration on the characters and the plot”, which is more than can be said for the small-but-vocal tribe of actor-fanatics that increasingly whine about not being catered to.

The actors were wonderful, and we all recognize the contributions that they made to this franchise that so many fans hold dear. But the appeal of Trek isn’t any single person or actor, no matter how much some wish it to be so.

Shatner Nails it, as Usual.... | Report this post to moderator

It's the STORY. It always has been. That's what made it great, made it classic, made it eternal. Think about it:
Do episodes of Voyager stand up to repeated viewings?
No, I'm sorry. They don't. They're 40 minutes long, with a five minute "A" story, a five minute "B" story and the rest is special effects. Throw in a little worn-out social commentary and a pinch of political correctness and call it done.
Roddenberry, Justman, Coon and the rest got it.
They wrote good stories because that's what mattered. They wrote good dialogue because they grew up with radio and knew words were important.

One other thought: What other actor can you name who has played the variety of parts Shatner has? I can't think of anyone, at least not anyone as memorable and with multiple Emmys. Remember that the next time somebody criticizes his acting!
