Bald Villains for New Star Trek Movie - Spoilers

Features

By GustavoLeao / 05:04, 17 May 2008 / Feature Films

According to a report on TrekMovie.com, the Romulans villains seen in the new Star Trek movie (including Nero played by actor Eric Bana) will all be bald, to distinguish them from the movie's Vulcans.

Also, these Romulans will not have the forehead ridges found on Romulans from the 24th Century Next Generation era, such as the Romulans seen in Star Trek Nemesis.

TrekMovie also reports than a large object seen in previous released spy photos is not a ship but it is allegedly a "drilling rig" being used by the villain Nero and the Romulans to destroy an entire planet. A bald Romulan, Sulu and Kirk appear in that scene.

More info at the full report (including a photo of the rig) which can be found here.

In essence, Abrams and gang took a look at Star Trek and said, "I like everything, especially the potential money, except the things I didn't come up with." Basically it'll be Star Trek without all that annoying Star Trek "getting in the way." I see.
"We're trying to capture a new audience. Namely Star Wars fans who've run out of crap to spend money on and bored gamers who will take one look and say, "not enough war in it."
Typical Hollywood.
"Who says Superman has to wear a cape?"
"Does Christ have to die at the end?"
"I'm a little disturbed by this gay cowboy idea. Couldn't we just make one of them a chick?
"Well, sure, somebody else created the series and concepts, but he's dead. So I'll (insert Bermanize, Abramsize) put my own stamp on it and take the credit. If it fails, I'll blame the dead guy for not being trendy enough.

So is it genetic or a fashion trend on Romulus? | Report this post to moderator

I can certainly entertain that it's a trend in the time period of this movie...kind of a "We're Romulan warriors damn it, not Vulcans" kind of thing. But it's a bit severe to differentiate them don't you think? All it takes is a "emotional, war-like cousins of Vulcans" line to establish WHO the Romulans are. I think the ridgelines of TNG were meant as a way to differentiate them visually. I don't think that's completely necessary. You can usually tell by demeanor and costuming. And if you DON'T know, then it can hieghten suspense if you want to use it that way.

If you have to rationalize the TNG bumps more than that, just assume they either incorporated Klingon DNA or it's a by product of their own superclone/human experiments.

I'd rather they weren't bald. Uggg. But oh well.

Does this mean we get an explanation episode in a future trek, or will people take it for what it is, namely a reimagining of the species.
