William Shatner Says He was Not Invited to Participate in Any Fashion in J.J. Abrams New Star Trek Movie

New York Entertaiment posted a new interview with Star Trek star William Shatner. Here are few excerpts.

You also talk [in his new book Up Till Now] at length about your troubled relationship with Leonard Nimoy and the rest of the Star Trek cast. How would you characterize that dynamic?

Well, I'm not sure what the rest of the cast were fussing about, and I didn't know about it until long after the show. But as for Leonard and I, I probably was a little too full of myself and thought maybe I should be getting some of his good publicity. I may have been jealous, or envious, or both. But then time took care of all that. Now Leonard and I are like brothers.

J.J. Abrams has a Star Trek prequel in the works. Any thoughts?

Well, I know nothing about the movie. I was not invited to participate in any fashion. It's been very secretive, and I'm not privy to any material whatsoever. I probably know less than you do.

But do you feel any attachment to it?

Well, I do, but it's like when the girl says, ‘I no longer love you and I'm gone,' for the spurned lover to hang on and say, ‘Well, I'll call you tomorrow.' Leonard is in it, and he taunts me about it.

Was he conflicted?

Yes, he was conflicted about whether to taunt me or not. And then the conflict resolved itself pro-taunting. I feel like taunt-o now.

The full interview can be found here.

I can't wait until the day when Abrams or anyone on that team tells the story of what really went down with the Shatner talks. It takes time, but it all comes out.

JJ and his crew aren't the old school execs. They're fracking sharp guys. I'm sure they handled him differently than Harve Bennet and those other dudes.

I can already see where this is going to go. To a Shatner apologist, "I was not invited to participate in any way" somehow means "J.J. lied to us, and never intended to include Shatner in the film!"

You know what? Maybe true... he knew like most of us that old Kirk was dead and he didn't want to divert from his story to explain away why Denny Crane is yakking away with old Spock..

It is also possible that he did sit down with the other guys and said "Allright.. for the sake of the diehards.. IS there any way we can fit Shatner in this thing?" -- and after a few beers and laughs, they smartly realized that they couldn't :)
