The 2007-2008 Tony Award nominations were announced May 13 by Tony Award winners Sara Ramirez and David Hyde Pierce at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

Star Trek The Next Generation star Patrick Stewart has been nominated as Best Performance By a Leading Actor in a Play for his role in the hit play Macbeth.

"It feels so good!" Stewart told Playbill News "This is a primo nomination for a stage actor, and for a British stage actor to be nominated on Broadway is about as good as it can get. So it's a wonderful morning. This is quite something for a show that started out in a 200-seat studio theatre on the South Coast of England. I was told that, if I were nominated, I would be the first actor in the history of the Tony Awards to be nominated for this role. That's amazing. I don't think any production of Macbeth has been nominated before."

The winners in 26 competitive categories will be announced June 15 in a three-hour CBS telecast from Radio City Music Hall.

Perhaps luck for the Scottish play will now change?

This may be the first nomination for 'Macbeth,' but I'm pretty sure Shakespeare himself won a bunch of Tony's for his early seventeenth-century work on Broadway.
