Star Trek: The Next Generation: Intelligence Gathering #4
Review by Patrick Hayes aka PatBorg
The cover(s): Cover "A" continues with more of the outstanding same from David Messina. This time it's Picard and Troi against the green background. I was never really a fan of Troi on the show until she finally got into her Starfleet blues -- just as she is on this cover. She just seemed more "official" in that outfit, and it works to her advantage for me on this cover. As much as I've doted on Messina's covers, the "B" by Joe Corroney is stunning! The ladies of Trek do some action posing. Troi, Crusher, and Ro giving and taking some phaser shots. It doesn't get any better than this. "RI" is the "B" cover sans logos. Overall grade: A+ for all three
The story: Los Tipton Bros. continue their Love and Rockets saga...okay, now that I have your attention, Scott & David continue their excellent story of "What the hell is going on?" Someone is doing something in Federation space, causing chaos, and, hopefully, this issue is dropping some clues that will be related in the final issue. Could you pick up this issue and start cold? Absolutely! The Enterprise comes upon some Pakled ships and trouble ensues. That trouble leads to our cover characters getting into some mischief that is reminiscent of previous Trek episodes, and is rightfully acknowledged by some of the characters (top of page 14's dialogue balloon). The resolution makes sense and it only makes me want to read the conclusion that much quicker! And Pakleds. They never been really cool, yet the Tiptons save them the way the Ferengi got eventually saved after a few outings on Next Gen. An enjoyable read in every way. Overall grade: A+
The art: David Messina continues a bang up job with an assist from Gianluigi Gregorini. If you've read any of my reviews before you know that I'd do anything to keep Messina locked down drawing Trek comics until he could be cloned. His great job continues in this book. Page one would have been a nice splash, if it'd gone all the way. David, why no splash pages? Would it disrupt the reprint paperback? Messina also shows some good emotions: page 5's Riker and Ro gone wild. And the Vulcan in the end, she looks great! Overall grade: A+
The colors: Ilaria Traversi increases the suspense a hundredfold with great atmosphere! Those Pakleds look creepy on page 5! They could have been written off as laughable, but not in that great darkness. The colors made the unfolding events even better. Other colorists should study this job to see how coloring can increase a story's value. Outstanding job! Overall grade: A+
The letters: Neil Uyetake -- the lettering gods have answered my prayers for sound effects! No ship battle sounds still. I would like some, so I don't mistake myself for reading Serenity. No transporter beam in sounds, either. Though some very nice kicked in door, fight, and phaser sounds. The best had to be the computer input sounds: they have to be there so that the reader knows the computer is being accessed. Top it all off with a nice character exclamation on page 17 and Neil finally got to flex the talent I've know he's had. Thank you, IDW! Overall grade: A+
The final line: I cannot wait to see how this all plays out. IDW deserves praise for producing this comic. Overall grade: A+
And, yes, this comic did come out two weeks ago. My apologies for not reviewing it sooner. I was still trying to figure out what the point of DC's Countdown was.
