Zachary Quinto Says He was Embraced by the Star Trek Fan Community

Jonja.net just posted an audio interview with Star Trek movie star Zachary Quinto. Here is an excerpt, cortesy of TrekMovie.

"I have been made to be prepared for this." Quinto said about the young Spock role "I feel like for this point on, Spock will be part of my career as an actor. I don't anticipate my career to stop now that I played this role. I get this question a lot ‘now that you are playing Spock what are you going to do?' I am going keep doing things that excite me and challenge me and challenge my audience and excite my audience as well. I have so very fortunate to be warmly embraced by the sci-fi community, and now more specifically the Star Trek community. That means a great deal to me, but my career as an actor is not limited to that genre or realm. So I am now excited to go off and explore other territories and play other roles and do other things as well. We are about to go back into production on [Heroes] and that will take up a lot of time, pretty much until [Star Trek] comes out next year. I will probably try and squeeze a movie or two in while the show is in production, and then try and get back on stage."

One good thing about the strike was that it allowed Quinto to do his Star Trek work without having to bow out of Heroes (temporarily or permanently) -- as I recall it had originally been said that he would be leaving the show midway through the season to do the movie (though the Heroes (mid)season finale suggests otherwise. This actually will work well for Heroes because they'll be able to capitalize on it a bit, especially with Nichelle Nichols still involved and recurring rumors that George Takei might not be finished with the show quite yet, either. It should generate some welcome interest in Heroes.

As for his acceptance by the fan community, I have to admit I've been quite pleasantly surprised at how well the fanbase has taken to Quinto given the icon he's playing. Maybe if Nimoy wasn't appearing too (thereby giving his implied approval) things might have been rougher for Quinto.

(That said I've heard very little about Chris Pine one way or the other, which has surprised me.)
