Brent Spiner Says Nemesis Got a Bad Deal, Can't Wait to See the New Star Trek Movie

Features

By GustavoLeao / 02:32, 13 April 2008 / Feature Films

TrekMovie.com posted their report about the second day of the Creation's Sci-Fi Grand Slam XVI convention this weekend, featuring, among others, Star Trek The Next Generation actor Brent Spiner. Here are a few excerpts from their report.

Spiner was asked about his opinion on Star Trek Nemesis, the latest TNG movie which he co-wrote with John Logan, and was a flop at the box office.

"I think Nemesis got a bad deal." he told the audience "It's not great, let's face it...I think it is actually better than Insurrection, myself, and I think it is touch and go between Generations and Nemesis. Clearly First Contact is the best movie we made...I think it has it's good moments and its not so good moments. The moment everybody seems to love is when Data gets blow up. To me that was a no brainer. This was the last time we were going to movie together and we got to do something big at the end. So for Data to finish his journey by sacrificing himself, doesn't that seem like the right thing to do. And here is the other part. If you had come to see the movie, Data would have been back again...but no! Nobody came! Something weird happened with that movie and we tried to analyze what went wrong and whether it was the movie that was bad. And we kind of went ‘Really, the movie didn't open.' We opened worse than any other movie we had done by a long shot. And so we thought ‘I guess it is gone.' So there you have it. But there is a new Star Trek movie coming and I can't wait to see. I am glad it's coming. I hope it is a huge success. I know it will be and I sure you will show up for that one."

The full report, including a video interview with Spiner, can be found at TrekMovie.

It seems a lot of people aren't willing to admit that much of the lack of success of Nemesis had nothing to do with what was put on screen. The audience was waining, the general public had already abandoned Trek on TV and with the tired formula of middle-aged actors wandering around corridors in jumpsuits, talking technobabble with "aliens" who have Play-Doh on their foreheads? Enough was enough.

Star Trek fans were the only ones that actually went out and spent $14 million on Nemesis in its opening weekend.. and when you consider all the huge films that were actually part of popular MAINSTREAM franchises that December? On-screen faults aside, Nemesis never had a chance. Insurrection should have been the finale for the TNG crew. Typical of Hollywood, a good concept was milked until it was unprofitable.

Amazing... I think this is the first time I've ever seen Spiner admit that Nemesis was anything less than fantastic. It's as if he was too close to the project for too long, fell in love with it, and recently had the opportunity (or rather misfortune) to rewatch it and realize its many flaws. I doubt it would have done well even without LOTR.

I totally agree. I still think that John Logan is a talented writer, but his co-writers on Nemesis, Spiner and Rick Berman, ruined his script. And the fact that all good scenes were cut from the movie and Stuart Baird was the worst Star Trek director ever did not help the movie either.

I actually like Nemesis. I think it was the second best TNG movie ever made. However, the blame for the movie being a BOMB was not the result of One specific reason, but a bunch if them. Here were the things that went wrong. (BTW, I'm no expert)

#1 An inexperienced director at the helm. Yeah, he'd done some movies in the past, but nothing memorable. Also, a director with no knowledge (Or respect) for Star Trek. He didn't even have good chemistry with the actors he was working with. Sad... So Sad.

#2 Insufficient promotions and advertising. Sorry, but I know plenty (and I meas PLENTY) of people who are casual Star Trek fans that didn't even know Nemesis even existed. Probably because they were too focused on "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" at the time, which brings me to number 3.

#3 Scheduling the movie 5 days before the opening of a big budget, highly anticipated, same genre (or attracts the same audience) film doesn't help your chances for success!!!!!

#4 Butchering the movie did not help. In my opinion, almost every scene that was cut from the movie that was included on the DVD (Including Wil Wheaton's scene), should have been left in the freakin movie. It would have made it much better.

#5 Shinzon should have been played by Patrick Stewart. The movie, I think would have had more of a dramatic impact on the audience if Patrick had earned that fat check of his and showed us how sinister he can be as Shinzon. A little makeup and digital imagery (ala X-Men 3: The last Stand) could have made him a little younger looking and different. I know we had seen "Sinister Stewart" in "Best of Both Worlds" as Locutus, but it would have been even better watching Picard and Shinzon facing off against each other and being played by the same person.

#6 Rick Berman and the saturation and stagnation of Star Trek really took its toll. People get tired of seeing the same story told with a different Alien and different planet. Rick Berman had lost touch with public desires years ago and was putting crap on TV when compared to what the other shows were doing. Don't get me wrong, Voyager was a good show. Enterprise was Good Star Trek (especially the second half of the series) but it was not a good show when compared to shows like "24", "Alias", "The West Wing", "CSI" and the other gems being produced at the time.

A culmination of all of these things doomed Nemesis. That's my take anyway.

Star Trek XI opens a week after X-Men Origins : Wolverine (which opens on May 1st 2009).

Better to have Star Trek take money away from the tired 4th X-Men film one week later, then vice-versa. If you want 'Star Trek' to get respect, it is going to open either in May, July, November or December.. period. That means that it will have to compete with other "big" films. If this were yet another TNG-era Star Trek film cast with middle-aged actors young movie goers could care less about? Then I would say, yes.. be worried. But this film is VERY much different.

Sorry but the new Star Trek movie is also getting a bad deal too. I mean to stick it between Wolverine and Watchmen? I guess the same moron that scheduled Nemesis is still working for Paramount.
