Simon Pegg Says J.J. Abrams is a Star Trek Fan and Loves the Franchise

By GustavoLeao / 14:11, 25 March 2008 / Feature Films

JoBlo.com posted a new interview with Star Trek movie actor Simon Pegg, the new Scotty. Here is an excerpt of the article.

For all those Star Trek fans out there who are worried about the film and where it might go, Pegg would like to put you at ease. "The people out there who are concerned have to understand that it is in the hands of someone who loves the franchise and you really couldn't have it better then that." As for working with Abrams he said he's "a machine...an engine of enthusiasm" adding, "it's great to have him working on the project."

The Deadbolt website also posted yet another interview with Pegg. Here are few excerpts.

About the Scotty role, he said "Well, I tried to make it brand new because I think it would be a disrespectful thing to James Doohan to go and just impersonate his Scotty. He took on the role as this physics genius and engineer in the great tradition of the Scottish because, of course, they invented a lot of important things in contemporary industrial society. I thought I'd go and approach it the same way he did, which was to start from scratch. So I tried not to watch - as much as I love the original series - I tried not to watch too much of it, because I wanted my performance to be a tribute to him and what he did with the character and not be an impression. It's a dangerous line you tread, really, because if I started doing an impression of Mr. Doohan then that might look like I was making fun of him, and that is the absolute last thing I would ever want. He's a legendary character and as an actor he genuinely created one of the most significant characters in modern sci-fi. It was daunting. It was like, ‘Sh*t, I'm going to be Scotty.' And I had to approach it very carefully."

Regarding the fan reaction to him getting the part, he said  "It's been mixed, actually, and I understand why. I've noticed some people have been like, ‘Great!' and some people have been like, ‘I don't get it. Why is he playing that part?' And I completely understand because Star Trek is very precious to a lot of people and they want it to be right. But, as I've said, my kind of party line on it is - obviously I can't reveal anything about the film itself, but as a Star Trek fan , if I wasn't in the film I would want a Star Trek fan to be making a film and it is being made by a Star Trek fan. J.J. is that person. He's exactly the person that those people should want and the decisions that he makes are in accordance with that love. So, you know, relax."

Plus, Pegg also told the StarTribune.com about his role and Doohan "I tried to approach the role like he did. He's a Scottish engineer who works in outerspace. He's a bit of a brawler. I didn't try to facilitate change,"

Pegg said he's signed up to star in three potential Trek movies.

"I'm looking forward to doing that for the next few years," he said. "Hopefully, I'll do a lot in between, too."

I'm optimistic too. But, it's WAY too long a wait. Plus, the film seems to be shooting FOREVER. Most films take 3 months. This one is taking almost six. Only 14 months to go ...

If you were truly following the film, you would know that major filming has already ended and the delay in release is because Paramount wants to spread its finished films out across the gap caused by the Writer's Strike, not because they are still filming. Pay attention.

@ MovieOnline: Simon Pegg Interview

MoviesOnline: What was J.J. Abrams like?

SIMON PEGG: He's fantastic. He's one of the nicest human beings I've ever met. He's a fantastic director -- I mean seriously energized by enthusiasm. He's so driven by his enthusiasm which is enormous. And I can't think of a better person for this franchise to be in the hands of. As I've said before, if I was not in the film and I was the most rabid Star Trek fan -- you know, I love it very much but not as much as some people -- the person I would want to make the film is a fan of Star Trek and that is most certainly J.J.

After reading the interview, and all the others, I really like this guy. He loves Star Trek and loves Scotty. Hey, what more can you ask from this guy. I think he has taken this role very seriously and is obviously trying the best he can to make it his own and still make it a tribute to Jimmy Doohan. He doesn't have to do that, he could just do whatever he wanted to and get paid. No, I firmly believe that he genuinely wants to make it work. So, I really find it very hard to criticize this man. I cannot think of anyone else now that I would rather have in main engineering. I have not heard too many folks in the posts here complain much about him, or have I missed something?

Simon, you rock!

"Frank O'Connor, the Irish writer, tells in one of his books how, as a boy, he and his friends would make their way across the countryside, and when they came to an orchard wall that seemed too high and too doubtful to try and too difficult to permit their voyage to continue, they took off their hats and tossed them over the wall--and then they had no choice but to follow them. This Nation has tossed its cap over the wall of space, and we have no choice but to follow it. Whatever the difficulties, they will be overcome. Whatever the hazards, they must be guarded against...."
