Jolene Blalock on Typecasting as a Science-Fiction Actress

Features

By GustavoLeao / 20:43, 23 February 2008 / General Genre/SciFi

io9 posted a brief interview with former Star Trek Enterprise actress Jolene Blalock, who plays "tough pilot" Captain Lola Beck in the upcoming Direct-to-DVD sci-fi sequel Starship Troopers Marauder, directed by original Starship Troopers scribe Ed Neurmeier. Here are a few excerpts from the article.

At a panel at Wondercon this weekend, Blalock was asked about her character of Captain Beck, and said "She's a no-nonsense staraight shooter, who shoots from the hip but also has a heart of gold."

Regarding being typecasting as a science-fiction actress because of her role as T'Pol in Enterprise, Blalock said "The reason I've done a lot of science fiction is because my first big job was Star Trek, [so] a lot of the offers i get are science fiction. The universe shines down on me, in a psychobabble way. That's what's inside me, and so that's what the universe offers me."

The full article, with photos of Blalock at Wondercon, can be found here.

Yes, thats true. And Neurmeier is a very good screenwriter, lets hope he is a good director too.

Jolene is the best | Report this post to moderator

Ok she's beautiful and has a great figure but she also has charisma. I think Jolene and Connor did their absolute best to try to make Chicken Salad from BermanBraga's Chicken S**T. I rented "Slow Burn" and yes it sucked about as much as the critics said but I was impressed by Jolene's screen presence-she reminds me a lot of Angelina Jolie.

I'm glad Jolene has kept a positive attitude about the biz and that she doesn't have to work to support herself- which is a good thing, I'd hate to see her on Cinemax afterdark or on an infomercial. Needing the work or not, acting is her vocation and I'm sure Jolene wants to keep her face out there and for now its in Sci-Fi. I wish the studios would give her a shot at A-List material because I'm tired of seeing the same faces every few weeks with a new movie- "cough" Kate Hudon "cough"-!

I know this is going to piss a lot of people off... but it needs to be said.

Look at that photograph.

She is not typecast as a Star Trek actor. That would be respectable.

She is typecast as BOOBS. When a casting agent looks at her, its like "I wonder how that would look in a catsuit" Was that not her function on NX-01?

sci fi actresses | Report this post to moderator

A lot of actresses either got their start on Trek or had early career appearances on Trek, including:

Teri Garr
Mariette Hartley
Joan Collins
Kirstie Alley
Kim Catrell
and many more

These actresses always make a special point of distancing themselves from Trek after they get "real" acting jobs.

Some actresses like Jeri Ryan have done OK after Trek, while others like Terri Farrell and Denise Crosby never had it so good as when they were on Trek. And as much as some actors and actresses want to get away from Trek, others like Whoopie Goldberg were dying to get on the show.

I don't understand why there is such a stigma in Hollywood of being associated with Trek. Anytime a Trek actor turns up in another movie -- from Miss Congeniality to Santa Clause -- all the Trek fans watch it just to see their favorite Trek actors in other roles. And dont we all get a kick out of seeing even minor guest stars from Trek turn up in other shows.

Trek fans are -- if nothing else -- devoted couch potatoes that watch a lot of TV and movies other than sci-fi. I'm convinced that the success of Boston Legal is in part due to the numerous Trek alums that make Trek fans a large share of the audience. I don't understand why TPTB in Hollywood dont recognize this fact and make a deliberate effort to tap the loyal Trek base by giving work to Trek actors and actresses.

will you people? I mean, for crying out loud, it's just a TV show!.... You've turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME! -- William Shatner on Saturday Night Live (1986)

I dont know if I will give this DVD a chance. This is the second sequel. In 2004 was produced the DVD sequel Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, one of the most awful sci-fi low budget B-movies I have ever seen. And now this. Poor Jolene.
