Anton Yelchin on J.J. Abrams Vision and Klingons - Minor Spoilers

Features

By GustavoLeao / 14:15, 1 February 2008 / Feature Films

Rotten Tomatoes posted a new interview with Star Trek movie actor Anton Yelchin, who plays the new Pavel Chekov in the prequel. Here are few excerpts from the article. Beware of minor spoilers.

"I talked to J.J. [Abrams] a lot about what he wanted. His thing was we're not making something that's supposed to be the old Star Trek. He's making his own movie but there is a bit of, like, I think people want to see what they love so we're all trying to find things that will remind people of the old characters. So it's been interesting picking up on little things."

Yelchin reveals that he spent most of his time on the starship. "Chekov is just on the Enterprise. A lot of it is green screen. I mean, the Enterprise itself, J.J.'s trying to shoot as much of it as he can with out green screen, but I think a lot of space is obviously green screen -- what I'm looking at while seeing the Klingon warships."

More from Yelchin can be found at the full interview.

UPDATE : TrekMovie.com has learned that the new Star Trek movie will indeed include Klingons. The site has received some reports that the movie does involve some kinds of battles and/or a war and that "Klingon soldiers" play a part in the film.

Quote from Anton Yelchin:
"I think a lot of space is obviously green screen -- what I'm looking at while seeing the Klingon warships."

This jibes with the earlier rumor of Klingons. See Screen Rant's report from October 2007, which now qualifies as a scoop.

Now Yelchin mentions "Klingon warships", but these don't need to be crewed by Klingons.

Consider that Eric Bana's 24th-century Romulans stumble back in time without a ship. They'd commandeer a ship sometime after they arrive in the 23rd-century. However, use of a Romulan ship would violate Star Trek canon, because young Kirk et al have never seen any recent Rommie ships (per TOS "Balance of Terror").

So, how do the Romulans scoot around Earth, undetected, when even their cloaked ships are visible to Starfleet motion sensors? Answer: Borrow a ride from old allies with whom you've already shared technology.

The Romulans can use Klingon warships in ST:XI, thus keeping themselves and their Warbirds unknown. After all, Romulans do use Klingon D7 warships in TOS "The Enterprise Incident". A secret Romulan-Klingon alliance might've been decades old at that time.

As far as I can tell, the main spoiler in this story is the fact that the film features Klingons - which is mentioned in the headline! Ok, it would probably have come out nearer the time of release and is about as surprising as Lex Luthor being in Superman Returns. Perhaps it's surprising that Chekov is a crewmember, given that he wasn't in the crew from the start, but not all that important to the film... The fact that it features Klingons is potentially much more significant. Please can you change the headline?

So it appears that young Chekov will be an Enterprise crewmember after all. Interesting.

KLINGONS ON THE STARBOARD BOW!! | Report this post to moderator

Did he say Klingons? That's the first I heard that Klingons are going to be in the movie, well sort of. I remember some discussions of bumby vs. non-bumpy headed Klingons. Aparently, the entire freakin' quadrant wants a piece of Kirk! Maybe he has mistaken a Klingon ship for a Romulan?

Is this the first "official" word on Klingons?

I think Maestro Abrams might give young Yelchin a phone call after this one.
