Come on now people... could you have really dealt with 7 years of a woman who looks like a little man. Not to mention her accent. Thank God Mulgrew got the job.
Voyager's cast did try. I'm not going to dispute that. They are all very capable actors and actresses, and they did entertain. But I'm sorry... Deep Space Nine was far better written, far better directed, and just a superior Star Trek spin-off. Yes, spin-off. The Next Generation was the series that gave Star Trek new life. They did 7 years, went to the big screen 4 times, and brought forth 3 spin-off shows. Of the 3 spin-offs, Deep Space Nine kicked major ass. Voyager was mediocre, and Enterprise was bearable until their 4th year when they turned it up a notch too little too late. Credit needs to be placed where it's due, and TNG brought Star Trek into the modern times. And Deep Space Nine was the best spin-off of the bunch, and at times surpassed TNG as a great sci-fi series.
I would just like to toss in my two cents. I read numerous posts on this forum about how terrible Voyager was before I actually watched any of the episodes. So, I actually went into it thinking that the show would suck. To my surprise, it wasn't bad at all- in my opinion. Occasionally, I would get tired of everyone nearly dying or dying and then coming back to life- but the it never failed to entertain me or make me think, "How on earth are they going to save the day this time??" Sure, it may not be the best writing out there but compared to other sci fi shows, it was extremely imaginative.
As for Mulgrew, Her acting was on par with Patrick Stewart. I now have the whole series and watched most episodes more than once. If one really studies her acting, you'll find that each word is thoughtfully presented. Her inflection and expressions always make me believe that she IS the captain. Janeway's goodbye to Tuvok in "Endgame" was extremely well written and acted. I could go on and on with examples, but I know you don't care.
I love the Seven of Nine and Doctor interaction. It provided some of the most tender moments in the series. I particularly loved when they sang the "you are my sunshine," duet. It reminded me of one of my favorite trek moments: Picard playing his flute in the Jeffrie's tube in "Lessons". Those are the moments that make the characters endearing.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't trying to change anyone's mind about Voyager, but I know everyone has their own opinion. I just encourage you to appreciate the hard work these people did for seven years.
oops
Y'know, watching those clips of Bujold as Janeway, and realizing that they never had a chance to do any ADR or retakes or what-have-you ... I thought they were quite good and would have given Voyager a more Euro feel. I never warmed up to Mulgrew's Janeway but I might actually have kept watching had Bujold kept the role.

I can't believe how many people are moaning about Voyager and Mulgrew. I think that Voyager was one of the best trek shows, and Mulgrew was an excellent captain, the crew were perfectly cast and the story was an interesting concept which made way for expansion in the trek universe. Personally I am sorry they ended the voyage after the return to Earth, I would have liked to seen another series or a movie afterwards(a movie of the Homecoming/Farther Shore books would have been a great way to end Voyager on a high and tie up the loose ends the las episode left out.)
Voyager was superior over all other Treks.

Whoops, double post. Worst posting system ever.
Anyone who says Voyager was terrible was never going to give it a chance to begin with.
I think Voyager was brilliant and it is one of my favorites. The characters were brilliantly acted and the writing was sound. If you want to see cheesy acting, just go watch the first episode of TNG again, or pick any episode of TOS. Yes, TOS and TNG are classic, but to call their acting significantly better than Voyager's would be a biased observation at best.

C'mon people, Kate Mulgrew gave 7 years of her life to this show. She diserves some cudos for that. The show wasn't what everyone wanted, but some trek fans are hardly happy with anything other than their own fan submissions. So take it for what it was: a fun adventure! And lighten up on Kate!
It's the fourth best show... :) Ratings wise, DS9 was more successful, but then ST:V was on UPN.
An utterly predictable response from TrekWebbers.

Voyager was simply a terrible show. Ron Moore lasted what...a whole week? before he realized it was unfixable. Terrible writing...terrible acting and a terribly executed concept. Unrealistic within the Star Trek universe's context. Voyager and the "brilliant Janeway" can handle the Borg and Borg Queen yet practicaly the whole fleet gets whacked by one borg cube at Wolf 359? Puh-leezzzzze. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
This woman is insane-quite out of touch with reality in comparing her series to TNG in any way...

Voyager is a lot like Next Gen. We were the two most successful ones.

uh HUH....keep telling yourself that, Kate. Maybe denial helps mask the pain.....
No, it wasn't. Next erroneous statement?

It was in the top five anyway.
That headline is one of the funniest headlines I have ever seen on this site. I wonder what medications she was on. Well, I guess Voyager is in the top 5.
