Zachary Quinto on Young Spock Role, Leonard Nimoy and Make-Up Process

The latest issue of Heroes official magazine features an exclusive interview with Star Trek star Zachary Quinto. Here are few excerpts.

Quinto : I have known for a while that I had got the Spock role. I knew for sixx weeksbefore they made an official announcement. It was a very difficult secret to keep. It was a long, drawn out-process of negociation. Obviously, it is a huge project, to negotiate the terms of that contract, but also to negotiate the schedule, and to get [the Heroes people] to let me do it. Tim Kring was behind it from the beginning. He, J.J. Abrams, and Damon Lindelof are basically the three people to whom I ultimately owe gratitude for this. They are the ones who made it happen, and Tim and Damon have a long-standing history of working together and they have a long friendship. Tim supported this all the way through and I owe him a lot for that. So it was just a matter of figuring out how to make it work, getting NBC behind it, getting Paramount behind it, and making sure everyone was happy with the availability. The schedule for the movie is going to be pretty demanding, so it's not going to give me time for anything else. I told a few people I was very close to, but I waited until the Tuesday and Wednesday of the week we made the announcement to spread the word to the wider circle of my friends and family so they weren't completely taken by surprise .

Were you a huge Trekkie growing up ?

Quinto : Nope. I was a peripheral fan. I have seen a feww episodes and a couple of movies, but I wasn't really into the franchise. I was more drawn to this project because of the characters and the point in their lives that we meet them. I was drawn to the character elements of the story rather than the international success of the franchise.

Have you spoken with the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy, at all ?

Quinto : I've had many cool conversations with that guy. He is endlessly fascinatingto me, really intriguing, and a genuine, deep artist. I feel real fortunate to not only have his blessing, but have his involvement in this endeavor. It is going to be enormously helpful and inspiring to work as closely as I already am.

How do you feel about thee pointy ears ?

Quinto : I feel good about it. I went and got my head molded last week.[...] I'm really looking foward how the [make-up] process unfolds. All that stuff is cool; I'm really into that movie magic. It will also really inform the character hugely to actually have the ears and step into the character from a physical perspective and balance out the emotional work I'll be doing leading up to production.

Have you had to practice the Vulcan peace sign ?

Quinto : I am left-handed, so I can only do it on my left, but I do exercises ! I rubber-band my ring finger and my pinky finger. It is part of my personal training !

I am glad to see no one is posting concerns about Quinto being a left handed Spock. I take that as a positive sign (which i permit you to make with either hand).

For all the Shatner extremists who call J.J. a liar... | Report this post to moderator

See how long Quinto's negotiations were kept under wraps for, even after the deal was done?

We have no idea what really occurred between Shatner and the studio. No idea how far J.J. tried to go to get Shatner in the movie. So all this nonsense about "J.J. is a liar" should just stop, until somebody comes up with an iota of proof to back up those libelous claims.
