Roberto Orci Reacts to AICN Negative Review of Star Trek Script - Minor Spoilers

Features

By GustavoLeao / 05:44, 6 January 2008 / Feature Films

Yesterday, AICN posted a negative review of what they claim is the script of the upcoming Star Trek prequel movie. But today, Star Trek movie writer Roberto Orci posted several comments on the TrekMovie and AICN talkback message boards about the AICN review.

"Yeah. AICN for some reason has never liked us." Orci wrote "The best example was one of their review for Transformers. I forgot which one of those wannabes wrote it, but it basically said how much they loved the humor, the characters, the sequences, and the structure of the movie, but they hated the script. Classic."

"If this movie works, these same folks will say that JJ "saved" a crappy script with his directing, just like Shia "saved' our dialogue by "making" it funny."

"Whoever wrote that piece HAS NOT read the script, and I would trust Nimoy to tell us if we know anything about the Trek universe over just about anybody else."

Regarding the spoiler in the review about the Enterprise and Area 51, Orci posted the following message at AICN board :

"Let's see. Area 51 is a place where we supposedly keep aliens and spacecraft A SECRET. In Star Trek, earth KNOWS there are spaceships and aliens. You might've even heard of one of them. His name is Mr. SPOCK. You do the math."

Later, Orci posted another message at AICN talkback message board regarding the negative controversy caused by the review "Controversy is good. This "review" lowering expectations is good. Bring it on. Maybe we'll put flames right on the side of the Enterprise just for fun."

Hate to be the pessimist, but I'm going to have to call out Orci on this one. If he had so much damn confidince in his script, then why did he come running out like a little girl to defend it so fast?

I understand it's a business and it all comes down to dollars, but in the end...who cares what a few internet fanboys are going to think? If the teaser knocks us all off our feet at Cloverfield, then that's all we're going to remember. That's all the general audience...the people this movie is supposidly targeting...is going to remember.

JJ has been wise to stay away from this so far, and hopefully will continue to do so. Orci and Kurtzman are already in the dog house as far as I am concerned, for the farce they called 'Transformers.'

Good for him. More film-makers should do the same.

Rumours don't go over well here | Report this post to moderator

Before Enterprise premiered one fan who'd toured the Paramount lot sent in the photo which clearly showed the logo patch on a sign attached to a special effects trailer. All he got here was flack-- the design was genuine and revealed what NX-01 looked like. That doesn't mean the whole AICN story is true, however. I do believe are going to "Star Wars-ize" this movie, though. And if that's true I'm wondering why the teaser poster and the follow up use 100% 1960's TOS iconography? With all due respect to Mr.Orci, he can't really give definitive details of a work in progress so why post on these sites?

...once again proves that it is nothing more than a flaming hole of utter douchebaggery. They'd do the Internet a great service if they went away. Permanently.

In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.

Political tags-such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth-are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire.

I don't have a problem with the bridge looking like the bridge of a stardestroyer (being larger, perhaps with more stages...) or having other uniforms which doesn't look trek-like. But for that it HAS to be a real reboot. The trek series we know should not emerge out of that movie.
My hope is, that they go back to the birth of Kirk and change timeline from that moment on (Kirk's parents were casted for the characters being of that age). maybe it will work.
But i really hope for a reboot. Like Spock or the Romulans changing things in the past so much that an alternative timeline is created. like a parallel universe. the one we know, the mirror universe and this new one. one of the possibilities is, that the humans learn who the romulans really are (in pre-tos time) and who they are related to. this may change everything for Kirks first five-year-voyage.

I sort of wish he'd have stayed above the fray. Though I certainly understand the temptation to fire back at an idiot, if you're the author of the new Star Trek movie, you should probably just be magnanimous and not give backward nerds the satisfaction of a dialogue. It also has the unfortunate effect of legitimizing the negative review a bit because he gave in to his self doubt and answered his critics with equal zeal.

I wish he'd have just said, "Whoever wrote that has not seen the script. There is no Area 51 in our script. This person is lying and we should get used to more of it. You've got a year to put up with naysayers and people just looking to stir up trouble. We are very confident in our script; please reserve your judgement for the real thing, not some anonymous review from a nameless source from a website replete with incredible sources and faulty rumors. Thank you."

Quote from TrekWeb:
Regarding the rumor that a AICN source has seen footage of the new redesigned U.S.S. Enterprise, Orci said at the AICN talkback

"If you watch the TV series and many of the movies than - if you are a Star Wars fan like me - you always have the feeling that there is a discrepancy between the size of the alien worlds / the space ship(s) of the Federation and the locations where most of the scenes have been shot. In other words, the Bridge is more like a living room and does not match the size nor style of gigantic size of the Enterprise at all. It is certainly unbelievable because it's mostly the only place we get to see (and of course three or four other places, but all in all just 1 percent of the ship, I presume)."
"We'll, this movie is gonna end all that for sure. The "stage play" and Disney like nature of the TV episodes is gone, the "we'll only show you three locations but trust me, this really is a gigantic spaceship we're flying around in"-feeling will also be gone."

?!?

Those are not Orci's words, that's a comment from an AICN source.

Orci's little pissing match with AICN readers is HERE. His username is Boborci.
