Nov 06 | J.J. Abrams is in talks to direct the opening episode of "Undercovers," his Warner Bros. secret agent pilot at NBC. Schedule permitting, Abrams, who also serves as executive producer and co-writer for the pilot, will make "Undercovers" the first TV pilot he has directed since 2004's "Lost" two-part opener, which is considered one of the best-directed pilots of all time and helped launch Abrams' career into helming such theatrical films as "Mission: Impossible 3" and "Star Trek." Oct 27 | Leonard Nimoy narrates a new documentary about a historic synagogue designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The film profiles Beth Sholom Synagogue in Elkins Park, Pa., the only synagogue designed by the renowned architect. The building, a National Historic Landmark, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. According to UGO and TrekMovie.com, actor/director Tyler Perry (Diary of a Mad Black Woman) will appear in the new Star Trek movie as the head of Starfleet Academy and he has already shot his scenes. Beware of Spoilers.
According to UGO, their sources reveals "a big scene that was filmed a couple of weeks back that involved Perry, Chris Pine (the young James T. Kirk), Zachary Quinto (young Spock) and dozens of other extras." Here are excerpts from their article.
"Tyler's character is overseeing some kind of Starfleet courtroom/assembly event where young Kirk is facing expulsion from Starfleet. It turns out that the Starfleet prez didn't look too favorably on Cadet Kirk for "cheating" on one of his critical tests. We know exactly what it is Kirk did: he rigged the Kobayashi Maru test so he could win it.
"So young Kirk is standing in front of his peers (human and alien Starfleet cadets and officers) and facing immediate expulsion from the Academy. After hearing the charge from Perry's character, Chris Pine-as-Kirk delivers a speech in the same vein as some of the classic Kirk speeches from the TV series. He wants to know how his cheating was found out, and it's revealed that there was a witness to Kirk's act. Kirk immediately demands to know who the witness was so he can face his accuser."
"And that's when Zachary Quinto-as-Spock stands up. Yup, he's the one that ratted on Kirk reprogramming the Kobayashi Maru test and he's the reason why Kirk is about to be expelled from Starfleet." UGO stop their spoilers right there, and promise more for the future.

According to TrekMovie.com, who also confirmed Perry appearance and the courtroom/assembly scene, this scene was shot in the Long Beach City Council chamber (story)(see photo) and that there is also some kind of student protest over Kirk not being expelled and actually being ‘promoted.' The protest might be part of the same scene described at UGO or a different scene shot at the location.

Damn, that is a great bit of writing on their part; a very clever twist.
Star_Child, you're absolutely right: this is gonna be a 'event' picture. I predicted years ago that Bennett's young Kirk/Spock premise (if it were produced) would have equaled the success of The Voyage Home, but now I'm starting to think that Abrams' take on the concept will in fact eclipse it.
This has all the markings of a box-office smash. The clever storyline, and the buzz that's gonna be created by the press, will propel this to heights no Trek film has ever seen before.
I cant wait to see this thing. :)

Could Tyler Perry be a clandestine Trek fan? Well, good for him. You're going to have to chalk this one up to the "things I least expected to hear ever in my life" column. It just goes to show that the Trek phenomenon has touched people from all walks of life. And it's not a bad business move, either for Perry or Trek. Tyler's films and other projects have been crossing over lately and the relationship can only be mutually beneficial.
Every time I hear news like this about the new film, it gets me just a bit more excited. Naysayers be damned. This is going to be not only a box office event, but a watershed event in Trek's history.
