Harlan Ellison Denies Rumors of Use of Elements of "The City on The Edge of Forever" in New Star Trek Movie

Features

By GustavoLeao / 09:47, 11 December 2007 / Feature Films

In a video interview to Trek Movie Report, "The City of The Edge of Forever" writer Harlan Ellison revealed that the Guardian of Forever will not appear in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek movie.(story)

"Some idiot reported [in the internet] that they have taken elements from my "City of The Edge of Forever" Ellison said "The Guardian of Forever, the story of Edith Keeler, all this stuff is mine, because of the Writer's Guild."

"In fact, J.J. Abrams, who is one of my favorite writers, and a brilliant, brilliant writer, does not need to steal from me. So it turned out to be bullshit. Turned out to be crap. [...] a friend of mine has seen the [Star Trek] script and said no, thats bullshit."

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

So we know nothing. Good to know.

All efforts to spoil the movie should be in vain.

Ellison had responded to questions of potential plagiarism posted by fans at his own website. He didn't solicit wide publicity. The usual gossip bloggers then stoked his words into a wildfire, and the usual dumbass readership sucked that up as such.

How much more suffocatingly PC this world would be without the Harlan Ellisons.

And talking of shiny, I have to agree with Spirit, Terry and Jean-Luc that Ellison is quite an whiny ass! Mah, guess he has a right to...

Good News I Think... | Report this post to moderator

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

So that means that this is a rumor debunking a rumor!
If the first rumor is true and this rumor isn't then the Guardian will be in it. If the first rumor isn't true then this rumor doesn't matter, unless it's true which just confirms the first rumor wasn't true to begin with.

As I opinioned before, restarting a franchise with a time travel movie shouldn't be the way to go. I think there are enough stories to be had with good drama and character development sans time travel. IMHO the new viewer who might end up going to see the movie may find the time travel aspect confusing.

I am really sad that the Guardian will not appear in the movie (if Mr Ellison is right) because I am a big fan of that pivotal TOS episode and I always find The Guardian a fascinating and misterious character.

Gustavo--please change headline | Report this post to moderator

I think the rumor that the Guardian of Forever being in ST11 (and presumably being the manner of time travel used in the movie) was pretty well spoiled by headlines on this site. I'd already been spoiled, so I clicked on this news story to listen to Harlan Ellison whine and pontificate and overreact and bitch as he is wont to do.

Well, I was delighted to see that I'm now unspoiled. The headline should obviously be: Harlan Ellison Debunks Rumor; Guardian of Forever Not to Appear in Star Trek 11.
