Casting Rumor : Jennifer Morrison to Play Number One, Captain Pike's First Officer

Features

By GustavoLeao / 11:50, 14 November 2007 / Feature Films

Sy Fy Portal is reporting a rumor that actress Jennifer Morrison will play the role of Number One, the First Officer on the Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike (played by Bruce Greenwood) in the upcoming Star Trek movie prequel.

The role of Number One was played by actress Majel Barrett in the 1964 pilot episode The Cage. The character was the un-named intellectual, problem-solving second-in-command serving under Captain Christopher Pike. Number One is the naval term for the First Officer on board a ship, second-in-command to the captain.

"Gene Roddenberry wanted a woman in a high-ranking role on the show, but NBC wouldn't hear of it," the site's source said. "Now his wish of having a female XO under Pike is finally coming to pass."

"Everyone wants to speculate on what roles these actors are taken on because of their looks, but they should actually be paying more attention to what might be meatier roles," the source said. "What's nice is that Number One will actually have a name."

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

The original report is here.

Now, I will admit that she would make a great Number One. The only problem is that from the set photos, she is going to have blonde hair for the film while Number One has black hair. Plus, she looked more civilian than Starfleet, so I highly doubt that she is Number One.

I still say that she's a young Carol Marcus.

Has anyone heard anything about the casting of Kirk's best friend Gary Mitchell, the original helmsman under Kirk?

...but IF she is the age thing seems like a non-issue. Wasn't she allegedly genetically engineered? If so, she could live as long as Vulcans for all anyone knows.

I might have to agree that this wouldn't fit only becase we are seeing Pike a good ten years AFTER the events of "The Cage". This means that Number One, who is already in her early 30s in "The Cage" should be in her 40s by the time Kirk and company take command, when this film takes place. I still think Carol Marcus is the better bet for this actress, in age and look.

Well, she's a bit young for a first officer! 28! The pic in the article makes her look 20, although one of the Alias pictures where she has darker hair and sort of business-causal attire makes her believable as somewhere in her early 30s. I think this might be a dicey move. She's about the same age as Young Kirk and Young Spock, the actors, whereas she was no spring chicken in the Cage and she should be firmly in her 40s by the time of Trek 11. I guess Majel was about 34 when she appeared in the Cage, so the character should be about 40 or so, right? 28 is a bit of a stretch. Of course, this is just using the actors' ages and it's nothing that's canon, but it's just a bit weird to make a first officer so damn young. She's second in command of a starship with a crew of hundreds. Who would you take more seriously? Riker, Spock, Chakotay, Kira, or Jennifer Morrison?? Too. Young. I've been supportive of the casting news, but I think this is a misstep.
