Bruce Greenwood is the New Captain Christopher Pike

Features

By GustavoLeao / 00:55, 8 November 2007 / Feature Films

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 51-year-old actor Bruce Greenwood will play the role of Captain Christopher Pike in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek movie prequel. The character of Pike will have an important role in the new prequel.

Actor Josh Lucas (Poseidon) was rumored to being considered for the role of Captain Pike.

Greenwood, repped by Gersh and Binder Entertainment, plays two roles in Todd Haynes' I'm Not There and appears in National Treasure: Book of Secrets. He starred in the science-fiction movies Deja Vu, I, Robot and The Core, and the short-lived TV series Nowhere Man, which aired on UPN aired from 1995 to 1996.

Christopher Pike was captain of the starship Enterprise for many years, as the immediate predecessor to later Captain James T. Kirk, and succeeding Captain Robert April. He was played by the late Jeffrey Hunter in the 1964 pilot The Cage. Actor Sean Kenney portrayed a disfigured Pike in the two-part first season episode, "The Menagerie", - a episode which will be showing in HD in theaters across North America and Europe this month

Been a long time fan of Greenwood | Report this post to moderator

I especially loved his acting chops in the Cuban crisis flick. But whatever he does, evil or good, his portrayal (as others have noted) have been excellent and true character submersion, not icon grandstanding.

I think when the celluloid rolls, you will think of the character "Pike," and not Bruce Greenwood.

Excellent choice.

P.S. For all the people who said that Ray L. was "too old" to play the part...notice Greenwood's age?

Every site reporting this story, from Empire to IGN, is describing Christopher Pike as "Enterprise's first captain".

Gee, guys, what about Captain Robert April ? He is part of Star Trek canon, you know.

Gustavo

PS - Greenwood is a fine choice for Pike. He got the serious presence the role needs. Good casting.

I've been really pleased with the casting to this point, and Greenwood is the icing on the cake.

Greenwood is the kind of actor who disappears into his characters, so much so that I once saw him in a fairly large role ('The Sweet Hereafter') and didn't even realise I had been watching him until the final credits.

This is very good news. That they would put Greenwood in this role instead of a more recognisable name says something about what kind of film they are making, and now I'm that much more optimistic about it.

Names Vs. Craft | Report this post to moderator
By: c.p. (Odo's file, contact) @ 08:48:01 on Nov 08, 2007

I think there are two ways to look at the casting:

1. It's a cast that falls short of a better option that includes so-called "A-list" actors who bring their names to the project and maybe talent.

2. It's a cast of actors who are good at their craft and the "A-list" star in this movie is the story itself.

I wasn't watching a shipwrecked man in "Cast Away", I was watching Tom Hanks shipwrecked. I wasn't watching Ethan Hunt, international spy, I was watching Tom Cruise, international spy. I wasn't watching Achilles, Greek legend, I was watching Brad Pitt.

However, I WAS watching Hector, Trojan prince, not Eric Bana. I WAS watching John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis, not Bruce Greenwood.

Abrams seems to be picking character actors who will embody the roles they will play in this story. If the story is good and their parts are written well, then I think Bana and Greenwood will pull it off better than most A-list names--if quality is what we're looking for rather than just a name.

Doesn't bode well for this film.

Having "big names" in a film has NEVER guaranteed success, and all it does is eat up your budget. How many "big names" were in shows like Friends or Sienfeld when they premiered? Or even TOS and TNG? It's about actors who are RIGHT for the part.

They are 'pretty' because they are young. If you can get young actors who are popular, attractive and remotely resemble the characters? I mean -- you cant have it any better than that, and they wont command a HUGE salary! Besides.. I dont think casting ugly people would help the film either ;)

...they have chops. They can carry a scene and do it well.

A-listers are dandy. But they come with an insane price tag. And sometimes they actually detract from, and ultimately hurt a film.

I'd rather have solid actors, who, is the movie is successful and they decide to expand the story, could and would return without a $25 million price tag.

I liked the idea of Josh Lucas, but this is just as good, perhaps even better. Bruce Greenwood can bring a seriousness to the role just with his demeanour and appearance ... I'm not sure Lucas would be able to do that. Bruce has a commanding presence, and he'll fit right in on the bridge of NCC-1701.

Good luck Bruce.

I've never heard of this guy. I have always been under the impression that was Jeffrey Hunter under all that makeup. I'm assuming he was dead by the time they filmed "The Menagerie".

UPDATE: I found him at IMDB. He was DePaul in a couple of other episodes.

I'm a little troubled and puzzled with the overall casting for this film. Too many new faces--and all too pretty ones at that. Add to this, "named" actors who aren't that big of stars. Either the film makers have a strategy I'm not aware of, or TREK isn't capable of garnering the kind of big talent a Hollywood production usually has.
