Chris Pine Confirmed as the New James T. Kirk

Features

By GustavoLeao / 15:21, 15 October 2007 / Feature Films

Actor Chris Pine is definitely in to play the new James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams new Star Trek movie, reports /Film and Trek Movie Report. Pine has dropped out of the Joe Carnahan-directed "White Jazz," which was apparently the final thing standing in his way of saying yes to Abrams and Star Trek.

On his blog, Carnahan said, "The young man playing Junior Stemmons has opted to 'go where no man has gone before' and thus, had to bow out of WHITE JAZZ. I've been talking to him this past week and knew how tough the decision had to be for him. I don't envy ever being in that spot but I gave him my full support, even if it meant he didn't do JAZZ. I get it. You don't get opportunities like that often and I told him as long as he could control as much of that process as possible and not get sucked into doing lesser sequels as a result of taking this gig, then good luck and God bless."

Carnahan has promised a role to Pine in Killing Pablo, his Pablo Escobar biopic which is set to go into production June 2008.

There are still no indications that William Shatner has been asked to play the older Captain James T. Kirk again in Abrams movie.

The original reports are here and here.

AICN News "Shatner is in ST XI" | Report this post to moderator
By: NEXUS (Odo's file, contact) @ 19:44:17 on Oct 16, 2007

According to Hercules at AICN.COM William Shatner will bein Star Trek XI.

In a very brief response to a poster Hercules hints that William Shatner will be in ST XI after all.

Hercules warns not to "buy into all the publicity that Shatner is not in ST XI"

I'm betting on some type of cameo at the end that allows Kirk + Spock to ride off into the sunset.

How do you know that the old Spock scenes take place in the 24th century? What if the are set before the events of Generations.

Hmmmm....

You are asking me why Nimoy would have to portray his character in the 24th century and not pre-Generations, i.e. 14 years ago so that Kirk can be included?

A lot has happened since 1994, heh. Mainly buffet lines and liver spots... that's why.

The following is not meant to be harsh, but will be direct:

It amazes me how many are being so very critical of the choices. It's not that there haven't been mistakes made in the past in Star Trek (both film and TV). Goodness no!

But, folks, we are talking about a man (J.J.Abrams) who has had a substantial resume of success in both fields. He is not a fly-by-night or flash-in-the-pan wunderkind of the week! He is a proven producer/director/writer who will, undoubtedly go on to even further heights and when his career is over, will most likely be recognized as a substantial filmmaker.

It reminds me of the old joke: a father goes into his boys room and says, "Son, you know, at your age, Abraham Lincoln was already a lawyer.....don't you think you should be out doing something?" To which the son replied, "Dad, at your age, Lincoln was already President."

Despite Abrahm's credentials, some on this site can't wait to second guess him at every turn and conduct themselves as if he has never done a film/program right. Or worse: that they have done better!

I guess I'm just not as blown away by the casting as I thought I'd be (compared to the John Cho/Simon Pegg announcement from last week, which I thought was frickin' cool!).

I'm sure he'll do fine if Abrams has faith in him, though ... like every other aspect of the film currently, it's a wait-and-see deal.

We are still discussing this?? | Report this post to moderator

I think it's hilarious that the SOLE reason we are even discussing 76-year old Shatner reprising his role as the deceased Kirk, is because Nimoy was cast in this film.. that's it! Had this been exclusively a younger cast only (sans 'flashback' scenes), noone would have even thought to suggest dragging all the elderly actors out of mothballs to play their old (or dead) characters again.

How hard is it to understand folks? Spock is still alive in the 24th century because (a) Vulcans live much longer and (b) his character has not been permanently killed off. James T. Kirk can claim neither of those unfortunately. And even if Kirk had not been killed off, Nimoy looks older than he did in
"Unification". This means his role would HAVE to take place in the 24th century, by which point Kirk would have died of natural causes anyway! I mean jeez guys, LET IT GO!

Quote from NEXUS:
Why put Nimoy in and not Shatner?

Direct statements of intent from Team Abrams must be ungratifying to fans who live and die by rumor. So, here's a little something from the bowels of the blogosphere...

At AICN, on October 15th, Hercules wrote, "By the way. All publicity about Shatner not playing Old Kirk in the movie is lie. Word to your mother."

When some AICN readers balked at this, Herc replied with, "I know a whole fucking lot about this movie that you do not. Wake up, Trekkie!!!!"

If Shatner was announced this board and others like it would light up like an x-mas tree.

Chris Pine's story has been up for hours + only 16 comments.

Pine is just another actor (I think he is a decent choice + wish him the best of luck)while Shatner is Kirk.

Let's hope they find a way to get the real deal in the film.

Why put Nimoy in and not Shatner?

If you look at "looks" (I don't as much when it comes to casting), you can also say that the cast is shaping up nicely.

I think this will be great. I saw some of the movie he was in with Lohan this weekend and he was easily the best thing in it. He's got some of that famous Shatner charisma in his performance. If he can do the deep stuff too, he'll be really great!

Pine is a Good Actor | Report this post to moderator
By: GustavoLeao (Odo's file, contact, web site) @ 16:02:35 on Oct 15, 2007

Pine is a fine actor, I have seen his movies - he is no Bill Shatner, of course, but I am sure he will deliver a nice performance as the young Kirk.

Boy, I am exhausted. Nimoy, Quinto, Enterprise Redesign, Pine...what a day for news articles. I spent the day posting all those articles and I am...well...tired.

Well people, enjoy the news !

Let's put this in perspective... | Report this post to moderator
By: Beamer (Odo's file, contact) @ 15:46:44 on Oct 15, 2007

I am sure that there will be the obligatory haters who will reign down on Chris Pine for...well, pick one. I am sure the haters will find something "lessor" that he has done. For instance (just to give them a head start), one of his last films was with the Hollywood Coke-head called "Just My Luck."

But let's put this in perspective.

Shatner gave us "Rocketman," "Lucy in the Sky," et. al.

Nimoy gave us "Bilbo Baggins" and that non-hit TV detective.

C'mon haters. When you can justify those steaming piles, then I will listen to your "rational" rants about how no one but The Shat can do it.

On the serious side: I wish Christ Pine the very best of luck in filling what he has to know are some pretty big shoes (not to mention that he MUST be aware of the media scrutiny that will befall him when the movie comes out). And then there is Paramount who wants a Kirk they can milk, and milk, and milk, and........

Good luck, Chris. Watch out for the sharks.
