Fans of Stargate Actor Paul McGillion Want Him as the New Scotty

Features

By GustavoLeao / 10:12, 25 September 2007 / Feature Films

According to Paisley Daily Express, fans of 38-year-old Scottish actor Paul McGillion have launched a campaign to cast him in the role of the new Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Trek prequel movie.

McGillion is better known as Doctor Carson Beckett in the hit science-fiction TV Series Stargate Atlantis. He was initially cast as a recurring guest, but his character appeared so frequently in the show's first season that he was promoted to main character for season two and three, and reverts back to a recurring character for season 4.

UPDATE : Trek Movie Report spoke with McGillion and he confirmed that he auditioned for the role of Scotty and said "Obviously it would be a great honour to follow in James Doohan footsteps."

The original report is here.

I know quite a bit about Trek and I would consider myself a greater fan than you.

Well Patti, I hate to say this but you have already demonstrated in the past that you don't do your research. For the most part, all the TOS character's ages were the same as the actors who played them for the most part. We can also assume that Star Trek XI takes place a few years before "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Below I have listed how old the cast was in 1965 when that second pilot was filmed, whether they were in the episode or not:

William Shatner (Kirk) - 34
Leonard Nimoy (Spock) - 34
DeForest Kelly (McCoy) - 43
James Doohan (Scotty) - 45
George Takei (Sulu) - 28
Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) - 33
Walter Koenig (Chekov) - 29*

* We can assume that based on Kirk's line in Generations, "No... you were younger" that the character of Chekov may have been much younger than Koenig, who played him. Anton Yelchin's casting in the role all but confirms this.

I don't know if I could shake the image of him saying 'what about the wee turtles - who'll look after them?!'

The cast will be and look like they are in their early 20's. He is in his late 30's. This guy is too old. I think he is starting his own spin.

Jimmy Doohan was 45 when he was in "Where No Man Has Gone Before", so if this film takes place before that? The age is almost perfect -- now I just need to hear the Scottish accent ;)
