J.J. Abrams Talks about Star Trek XI Directorial Decision

Star Trek XI producer/director J.J. Abrams spoke March 2 at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California.

About the upcoming Star Trek XI, Abrams said at Cinequest : "If I talk about this movie, everyone else who is involved with it knows where I live and will use that and, er, kill me. I can say that when the script came in it was so well written, it was so emotional, it was fun, and big and I found myself unable to not direct it! I couldn't give it up. I think it's going to be great. If in my gut I felt there was nothing else to offer, I wouldn't do it. It's not a business decision, I would rather take no money and do something inspiring. I hope it ends up being both a really cool, original, emotional ride and comes from something that we're familiar with."

"The truth is, there is no sure thing, and I would argue that when you are doing something that you do really care about, and are passionate about, the odds are overwhelmingly in your favor, it will succeed."

Star Trek is a classic I'm now watching the updated TOS episodes and I'm loving it. But the original script wasn't touched. Very pure! Now. Mr. Abrams is going to ruin a classic. Of course people may disagree, but this movie will bomb! A prequel for TOS or a re-imagining won't work. i.e ENTERPRISE. Which was a great show, but it failed! STAR TREK can go so many ways, there is a whole universe out there, why keep telling the same story. The public e.g non-ST fans don't care about kirk and Spock, only we do. They want a good story for their $8.50. So do I, remaking anything with the TOS is like remaking Indy, or that other Sci FI classic with Luke and the gang. How can you! It amazes me that I can look at old TOS episodes and still be entertained with the special effects of the day, hummm, maybe its the story. I wish movie maker would stop copying off of George’s success with Star Wars, please Hollywood stop reinventing the wheel! Come up with something new, your own ideas for a change. I think after this movie the franchise will truly die.

Do you have a clue?

Nemesis' budget was $60 million.

Stewart got 12 of that, Spiner got 8.

Are you saying that Paramount's "alleged" cheapness is why Trek sucked.

I guess he's going to experience what every Trek director has had to.. | Report this post to moderator

... make a good Trek film for Paramount's standard Trek film budget: $5 million.
