Marina Sirtis Criticizes Nemesis Again, Says James Marsters Should Have Been Shinzon

Features

By GustavoLeao / 14:14, 29 September 2006 / Feature Films

The latest issue of SFX magazine features an interview with Star Trek The Next Generation actress Marina Sirtis, in which she again criticizes the latest TNG movie. Here are few excerpts.

When asked for comments on Nemesis, she reveals that to this day it still surprises her and her fellow cast members that the movie tanked so badly. She also provided the following reasons as to way she thinks it may not have done as well as it should or perhaps could have. "I think the fans want to see the whole team in action, while that was very much Picard taking centre stage. Also..." She added tentatively, "I didn't think Tom [Hardy] was at all convincing as a young  Patrick [Stewart]. Don't get me wrong - he's a great, great actor and a really lovely guy. But he didn't look a bit like Patrick At all. They should have cast James Marsters. They auditioned him, you know. I think physically he was much more suitable for the part."

Sirtis would be happy to come back as Deanna Troi for a new Trek movie or guest on a new show. "I'd be happy if I was still playing her [Troi] now. No really. Being on Next Generation was the best experience of my life."

Asked about his guest role in  "These Are The Voyages", which was criticized by both cast of Enterprise and the fan base for being more of a Next Generation episode, she said "It wasn't so much the fans as the cast. They were all lovely to work with on the set. Although, I did hear they weren't at all happy with their show ending with what was essentially an episode of The Next Generation."

More from Sirtis can be found at Sci Fi Pulse.

Lets see, Nemesis had....... | Report this post to moderator

Lets see, Nemesis had Vampire Romulans, a 24th century dune buggy chase and only lacked the introduction of a pet space monkey to be about as interesting as a made for Sci Fi movie.

I knew this movie would fail about when about 30 minutes into it I had the same feeling in my gut as I did while watching 60+ Nichelle Nichols(Uhura)doing a fan dance on a sand dune hoping to seduce Klingons to come out of their fortress.

No Marina, STX had problems that went much deeper than who played the head Vampire Romulan.

Casting was the least of Nemesis's problems. With that script and that director, it didn't matter who they put in the role of Shinzon, it still would have sucked.

Sick of actor complaining | Report this post to moderator

I like a good diatribe against later Berman Star Trek. But these TNG actors constantly biting the hand that fed them, while proposing their own inane ideas, is sickening. I believe the ENT actors, who have much more reason to complain, have acted with much more class.

Here is a thought. They should stop interviewing this F- actress and spend more energy on reviving the franchise.
I just discovered Battlestar Galactica. It has rejuvenated my faith that television can produce an exciting, interesting science fiction series with a minimum amount of technobabble nonsense. Star Trek folks could learn a lot from this outstanding series.

And, surprise!, the characters are all flesh and blood instead of some kind of perfect idealizations that are unrealistic and utterly boring. They have desires, emotions, screw up once in a while, and do all the things every one of us has done. At the same time they are heroic. Reminiscent more of the TOS characters than the ridiculous caricatures that followed.

I was sort of expecting to read "ah yeah the movie was bad because [insert fan complaint here]". I'm glad to see, she tells her OWN opinion. I'm also glad she doesn't claim to have all the answers, why the movie didn't perform well. I don't know either. But even I haven't seen Nemesis. I must say, I got tired of the TNG movies because they weren't like the TNG series at all.

Didn't Marina already say that Trek X "sucked"? Not that I disagree with her on that point, but... whatever.

Thia isn't news. Stuff like this is just the actors displaying their egos and making themselves look like assholes in public. Why help them to this end (even though they probably deserve it)?

James Marsters wow never tought about it but now thinking about it...it could have worked better, i did not care for the young picard in nemesis because of that...not looking like picard at all, plus i also agree about not giving the cast important things to do in the movies, when in a scary movie you can give 20 people time on screen with diferent plots and work but in trek i dont know why they dont give cast members more important things to do.

James Marsters...

Interesting.
