Bethesda Softworks announces a third video game to celebrate the 40th anniversary of our fave pop-cult phenomenon. Star Trek: Encounters is an arcade-style shooter, currently in development by Scotland-based 4J studios for the Sony PlayStation2 console.

You'll command over 60 different starships from the Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Borg, Xindi, Ferengi, Kazon, Orion, Cardassian, Vulcan, and Species 8472 fleets in authentic missions based upon classic moments from all five live action Star Trek television series: TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT.

Robust multiplayer modes allow you to battle against computer-controlled opponents or against a friend in split screen, head-to-head action. Two players can also experience onslaught mode with cooperative multiplay.

Star Trek: Encounters is scheduled for release this autumn, along with Star Trek: Legacy and Star Trek: Tactical Assault (story).

Margaret Wander Bonanno's Captain Pike novel Star Trek: Burning Dreams is now at shops in the U.S.A., Canada, United Kingdom, and Deutschland.

So far, everything I've read about this game is GARBAGE and it's not in the spirit of Star Trek from what I can tell about it. It's all about killing, nothing more. I'm sure the effects and the mechanics of this game are fantastic, but it's a piece of shit as far as being connected to the Star Trek name.

At least with any Star Wars title, you know there will probably be combat since the theme of Star Wars is a WAR. But Star Trek is about peace and finding creative solutions for difficult situations. I would hope that in centuries to come, that violence will become the LAST option.

To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And, at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between, plus some things I can't remember, all rolled into one big 'thing.' This is truth, to me.
