Lost Trek Alum Gives J.J. Abrams Cool Enterprise Advice

Trekkies who've been marooned on a tropical island might not know that Daniel Dae Kim appeared in two Star Trek TV series before becoming beached on Lost. Kim is Gotana-Retz in Voyager "Blink of an Eye," and he's MACO Corporal Chang in several episodes of Enterprise.

IGN corralled Kim and Lost co-star Jorge Garcia at a Comic-Con press interview, where their J.J. Abrams connection and Trek enthusiasm led to some franchise crosstalk...

IGN: There are people who lined up here to see you at 7:00 am. Would you have ever done that for a television show or for anything?

DDK: I know that for me, I saw all three Lord of the Rings movies on opening day, and I never see movies on opening day, because I'm not a big fan of crowds. So that was a pretty big deal. And I think that I've seen almost every episode of Star Trek, the original series, at least three or four times.

IGN: Daniel, as a big Star Trek fan, with J.J. working on the new Star Trek movie, are you going to hit him up for a part?

DDK: No, but I've already given him advice; I gave one of the producers some friendly advice, but that's about it.

JG: Oh, like, "Don't blow it!"?

DDK: No, what I said to him was "You gotta make sure the ships are cool." Because to me, that's what it was all about. I used to have models of the Enterprise, I used to make models of the Enterprise, so I said to make sure, if you're going to do all those kind of effects, make sure the Enterprise doesn't look like it's made of paper mache. You know, when it explodes, and stuff like that.

IGN: Would you want to be a part of it?

DDK: Yeah! I mean, any kind of decent project, especially something that I've been a fan of, I would love to be a part of. But you know, my first obligation is to Lost. And I think if you want to dance, you gotta get asked.

IGN: Greg Grunberg says he wants to be a Klingon. (story)

DDK: That's a cool thing.

Starships, not explosions | Report this post to moderator

I'm all for detailed ships (CG or otherwise) but they don't have to blow up. In fact, I see no good reason why the Enterprise has to even be damaged.

I dream of a movie that doesn't resort to destructive forces to hook the audience. CG can actually be used for other things than monsters, explosions and catastrophies.

I grew up with TNG and the reason why I loved the NCC1701-D was not that it could blow up. On the contrary, it felt like a safe haven most of the time.

The ships also have to look plausible considering the time period in this movie. The time period is, in fact, the 1970'es. You have to mix that with the future, which can only lead to compromises.

Why didn't he tell him, "Hey Jay, don't fuck it up man, they'll eat you alive." That seems like a better warning.

Slightly off-topic but probaly worth mentioning that Terry O'Quinn who plays John Locke on Lost was also Admiral Eric Pressman in one of the best TNG episodes from S7, The Pegasus. :)

F/X advice | Report this post to moderator

Although I don't really care about F/X methods, the one standout in Enterprise: TATV was how the Enterprise-D looked in CGI. The shading and rendering was quite remarkable. MUCH sharper and sleeker than during its TNG run. Now picture TOS shaped ships in CGI. It might look pretty cool.

BTW, somebody mentioned that this series might be the second five-year mission of the original crew. That might be the best idea I've heard yet.

Ships are important | Report this post to moderator
By: zafier (Odo's file, contact) @ 10:05:25 on Aug 03, 2006

I amplify this...hopefully JJ reads some of these posts. It seems like as digital technology has become more the norm in Trek over the last 10 years the ships have lost some of their majesty. They are treated more as planes or rockets, constantly changing direction. Nemesis was the height of this. These ships are quite large and shouldn't be able to just zip around. I think the old camera-motion photography actually helped this and also gave the ships a physical tangibility that they lack now. They just don't seem real because they aren't anymore. I hope that this is taken into consideration. Give the Enterprise her majesty back!
