Of course it could still end up being a gigantic flop, but compare this attitude with that of Nemesis director Stuart Baird who famously called characters by the wrong names and openly confessed that he thought Star Trek was silly. It's not that an outsider or even a skeptic can't do a good Star Trek picture. Meyer certainly came on board skeptical. But he still took the characters seriously and it showed. By the end of his time on TWOK, he might have even confessed to being a fan.
But Abrams seems ahead of the game, IMO, because he already believes in the characters and that they merit an ambitious big screen treatment. He proceeds immediately from a perspective of respect instead of from the point of view of someone who needs to be convinced first. That's refreshing if nothing else.
(Subject was supposed to say: ...getting tired of this "back to the essence of Star Trek" stuff)
I'm a long long time fan of Trek. There are certainly more rabid/enthusiastic fans than I am, but every series has had some appeal to me. Even Enterprise, once I got past the revolting theme song.
But to be honest, I'm kind of tired about "new" Trek approaches that try to swoop into the area of time around the original series, latch on, and try to gain their credibility and legitimacy in such a parasitic way, instead of standing shoulder to shoulder on their own two feet with the other series extensions.
Why can't the original series stand on its own, be left alone, and remain the foundation of the series, without constantly being f__ked with?
So yeah I eventually came to enjoy Enterprise, but it feels like the knee-jerk approach by the license holders/maintainers/owners when looking at a new extension of the series, is "Oh my God everything sucks, and we suck, too! The only thing that was good was the original series! We have to cash in on that or we're destroyed!"
The invasive nostalgia is getting tiresome, and I just want Star Trek to move into its future, build on its past successes, and not continue to dismantle them from underneath!
All that said, I do respect Abrams, mainly for Lost, and I'm hoping he'll be able to do something cool for Star Trek, in a respectful way.
I just would have preferred that he was extending into the future, instead of mangling the past...
I hope we get a complete reboot or the Next Generation after Next Generation. I do not care to see a Star Fleet Acadamy prequel crap. I can't stand prequels anymore, it messes up my visions of the characters past. I know this is going to piss off many here & it most likely will never happen, but I would like Abrams to throw away everything after TOS. Create a movie based just after TOS with a whole new cast & not have to follow TNG cannon.
Why no mention of DS9? Far better than TOS or TNG.

>>The original series and Next Generation were about something - human nature and the idea of coming up against the unexpected and the often terrifying. It was a good story that happened to be science fiction.
sometimes show up at the donmurphy.net forums to talk about the Transformers movie they helped pen. When asked what he was working on currently, Robert Orci said he was working on Trek, and further had this to say:

SO, ur talking about having written transformers WHILST working on a star trek script
Robert Orci:
yup. After all, we're talking about rebooting a franchise, which is instructive for Trek.
I've been coming to these boards forever, though I don't post much... same with the donmurphy boards. but I thought this would be interesting to some of you. He shows up over there once in a while to talk Transformers, in case anyone wants to take a shot at coaxing a bit of info from him.
As Spock said to Kirk: "The Needs of the Many, Outweigh the Needs of the few, or the one." Ladies and gentlemen, alas, we are the few in this case. The franchise cannot afford to focus on pleasing us. As much as I'd love to see references to the Kitomer Massacre (or 'Kitomer Campaigns' if you're from Romulus), Wolf 359, Q, or Hugh Borg, JJ Abrams must focus on starting fresh. I believe that he is using the Trek Back Catalogue to capture the ESSENCE of trek. He is not trying to account continuity or add to established plot lines.
This Trek will be something new for everyone and if you are turning on your TV and you are tuning into a Trek show for the very first time, this show has to be focused on YOU. Not us. Not crazies on this board like myself who will blow a gasket if somebody gets beamed while the shields are still up.
Perhaps the show's plotlines could enhance our continuity references, but if new fans watch the same plotline, they won't even notice the references. Much like Pixar movies have jokes that both kids and adults laugh at but for different reasons. Or when Pres. Bush uses terms in his speeches that, to me, just seem like words, but to his base, they seem like biblical references. My analogies are poor, I know, but I think you can catch my drift.

Anything I say, people will read into it and make assumptions.
He's no fool, that's for sure. It seems obvious that he, or one of his lackeys, read the boards.

But we have an incredible beginning of a really dramatic story, and it very much honors the canon of Star Trek.
All I can say is that, again, this sounds really, really cool.

On the other hand, it won't be like anything you've seen before.
I about crapped my pants, because I swear B&B said that about Enterprise. Dammit, J.J., couldn't have you said that another way??!?! lol
--------
THAT is the Exploration that awaits you: not mapping stars or studying nebulae, but charting the unknown possibilities of Existence.
Thumbs up for honoring canon!! I knew it, and you just confirmed it. Thanks!
I'm curious to see what you have in store for os. I think Star Trek has already dealt with every major subject at least once, but, maybe not...
I sense that Abrams is a TOS and TNG fan, but as many other people he dropped out afterwards. I can't say I understand why. But I'm a TNG fan myself, so maybe its going to be pretty good, after all...
