Scott Bakula Says Paramount Did Not Support ENTERPRISE

The latest issue of the German magazine Space View features an exclusive interview with ENTERPRISE star Scott Bakula. Here are a few excerpts (translated from German)

SV: What was the difference working on QUANTUM LEAP and STAR TREK ENTERPRISE?

Bakula: The main difference was that I had six colleagues on ENTERPRISE and we shared the work. On QUANTUM LEAP, Dean [Stockwell] and I were alone. [...] For example: during the shooting of the ENTERPRISE pilot, I had more free time than on four and a half seasons of QUANTUM LEAP.

SV: Did you watch THE ORIGINAL SERIES, when you were young?

Bakula: Not when I was a child, but I saw it regurlarly during my college days - and I couldn't get enough of it! I loved it! I saw all movies with the original crew, but then I lost contact with the franchise until I came back as an actor on ENTERPRISE.

SV: How do you explain ENTERPRISE's cancellation?

Bakula: It definitely wasn't because there are not enough fans anymore, but because of the TV politics. If we were not forced to work with UPN, we would actually talk about Season Five. But we were at the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong politics. There are so many people who supported us, but those people were not at Paramount anymore. In the short time we were there, the studio changed totally. We simply started at the wrong time. (laughs) On the other hand... maybe we hadn't been there, if we hadn't started four years ago.

SV: Do you think, that fans will like ENTERPRISE on DVD?

Bakula: I think they will like it. I actually hope that it will be a great hit, so that all critics will see and realize what they let go. But ironically [...] these ENTERPRISE DVDs will be sold and watched somewhere on this world twenty years from now, but all those series now airing on UPN, won't be remembered. That's not meant with evil intent, but it's the nature of the genre!

Thanks to TREKNews.de for the excerpts.

While Scott Bakula's opinion of Paramount and UPN is months-old news now, I thank Space View magazine for doing its part to make sure that all TREK fans get the poop.

Paramount and UPN gave ENT every last chance to improve. They kept the show alive when it was obviously hemorrhaging viewers. Their only fault would be in not advertising enough but, as has been said before, 12 million people knew where to find it for three years and most did not watch it.

Scott is probably right to a point. Paramount did not seem to go all out for this series and the lack of quality control over Berman made it very difficult for the show to flurish. As time went on more and more Star Trek supporters within the studio heads were leaving and the new execs were going after a different audience. This makes for a lousy foundation to build a show like Star Trek.

I agree with Scott on this point. Whether the series will be remembered in a positive light is another story. I like Scott Bakula and he really is a fan of the genre so I do tend to give him some slack when he makes criticisms like this.

UPN must go!

Funny how Scott was the biggest backer of the network until the show got canned?
Strange how he was all compliments to Berman until the show got canned?
Of anyone to talk up Scott's the only one able to do so, he's the show's star! When Patrick complained things happened.
As for watching Enterprise 20yrs from now...I could barly watch them in their first run, for get DVD's & re-runs!
Well, maybe season 4 I'll watch, made the most sense & actually tied into the Trek we know.

Its sad that all these people, both in front of the camera and behind it, lost their jobs on Star Trek. For many of them it was an important part of their lives. Over and done. But it must also be a little frustrating that some people in the media, and some fans of Star Trek, kicks them while they're down. I won't do that.

Well, the sci-fi genre isn't dead. But I'm afraid a hiatus for a few years is needed to end the civil war among fans. When the dust settles, its time for another burst of Star Trek.
