When Shatner says "start all over again from scratch" it could mean a reboot. I don't know exactly what he meant. But I am very much against a reboot.
Let's face it. It's the only thing anybody cares about or would pay to see. I also think Shatner wants it to happen.
What better way to put the series back on the map than to return it's greatest and most popular hero?
This was a pretty bold statement made by Mr Shatner.
I noticed that someone mentioned that Star Trek.com posted this story. Doesn't that alone send a message?
I think that Shatner knows something that we don't.It seems that Shatner has been taking much more of an intrest in ST over the last year or so. He came close to returning as Kirk on Enterprise last year.
It has been rumored (I think at BBK) that Shatner was asked to be in ST 11 while in negotiations for Enterprise.
I really think Shatner will be involved somehow in the next ST project which will be sooner rather than later.
You go Shatner. Surprised everyone isnt flaming him like they did Joelene Blalock a few months ago.
The sooner Paramount realizes what "Real" Fans do and that is that Trek needs new Blood, the sooner they can get this franchise up and running again.
I just noticed Startrek.com posted this report. That site is run by Paramount, is it not? I think it's pretty telling that they chose to run an article (interview, report, whatever) in which a big name Star Trek alumnai comes out and says the franchise needs some new people running things.
I mean this statement alone, where he describes the person who should be running Star Trek, "Wonderful producers who love STAR TREK who wish to put it back on. And have a singular person - that person we gotta find - to drive with honesty, and sincerity, and with veracity, and clarity, the whole STAR TREK concept" has to be a slap in the face to Rick Berman by William Shatner.
Shatner to Berman: "BYE BYE." You think Shatner knows something we don't?
Quote:"When asked to what he would say to the TREK producers about the future of the franchise, he responded frankly, "I'd say, you gotta get outa there, guys. Bring a new team in and see ya later.
Translation: Get lost Berman! You got to love that!
Quote:" I would say, take a broom, let's clean everything out
If not a broom then a shotgun!
Quote:"and start absolutely [from scratch] with some wonderful writers who love STAR TREK. Wonderful producers who love STAR TREK who wish to put it back on. And have a singular person - that person we gotta find - to drive with honesty, and sincerity, and with veracity, and clarity, the whole STAR TREK concept."
Translation: Berman hated TOS and Trek and it showed big time! So lets get someone who actually LIKES Trek and can keep continuity etc.
He is pushing for Coto, Judith and Garfield!
Quote:"Upon shouts of "You do it!" he joked, "If I'm elected...!"
Do the return of Kirk for gods sake! Lets stop screwing around and get "The Return" done with TNG, the ending of Borg and the tying in of V'Ger as the Borg! Screw the prequel crap!
Quote:""I mean, they've done a wonderful job and they've done all these STAR TREK things. But you know, people get tired of the job. I mean, you get burned out. Not that they are, not that they could be - but just start again."
Translation: Don't slam this idiot Berman and Braga too bad everyone knows they are complete and utter dipshits. Say something nice and push to get rid of them!
Quote:"At the conclusion of his time on stage, Shatner said "Those of us who love STAR TREK know that there is a future. It's just taking a pause right now. We don't have anything to worry about. Paramount Studios has made ... in excess of $2 billion? From the franchise of STAR TREK? They aren't gonna let that die! There's too much money there! So, there will be another STAR TREK, I assure you."
I am suprised that Paramount has allowed a $2 billion dollar cash cow to fall to such low levels. A testament to the ongoing "incompetent and compete stupidity" of Paramount management!
Bravo to Shatner for going on record with this. It only adds fuel to all the others who've said the same thing lately. And it's quoted on Startrek.com -- that can't hurt a bit. If this doesn't put the writing on the wall I don't know what will.
[I keep on doing this... GRRR... this is a reply to TRexx's post down below.]
Thank you for pointing this out. People need to remember, Manny Coto was 110 times better than Berman and Braga solely running things, but when Berman and Braga are running at a steady -50, in comparison Coto seems like a production god.
Coto would make a fine addtion to the staff writers of the next incarnation of Star Trek... but the actual executive production should fall to someone with a little more experience and a little less TOS name dropping.
And while I may get flamed... I still think JMS would be one of my top picks to take over the franchise.

Shatner said it perfectly but I'd bet if this had been Robert Beltran or Jolene Blalock, fans would be telling them to shut the hell up. Why is it some fans badmouth actors for saying the exact same thing we all say? Are fans the only ones allowed to criticize?

"Maybe in another thousand years, we'll have teleportation and all that other Star Trek stuff. But with our current technology, we can't even make William Shatner's hair look real." --- Bill Maher
We know he's talking about Manny Coto, don't we? For cryin out loud, the writting is on the wall! Let it rest for a few years and Berman can pass the baton with dignity to a guy with a fresh enthusiasm for the franchise. Berman did a great job for a very long time and we have to give him his due. I can't imagine how hard it must have been to have all of that riding on his shoulders for almost 20 years, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that fresh blood and idea's are necessary (in any project) after so long behind the wheel.
When Insurrection came in on the heels of First Contact, I knew that was it. He should have never let that movie look like a so-so episode of the TV show.

"I'd write my senator/congressman about this....but I can't find my checkbook."
I could not agree with him more. I would love to see the whole thing wiped clean and done new and clean! Thank you Bill for publicly saying what so many of us have been asking for.

"I'd write my senator/congressman about this....but I can't find my checkbook."
Great stuff, Bill! Wow, that had to be a real crowd pleaser. Bill Shatner has come a long way in 20 years, from the time he told the fans to...

GET A LIFE, will you people? I mean, for crying out loud, it's just a TV show!.... You've turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME! -- William Shatner on Saturday Night Live (1986)
