Ira Steven Behr's THE 4400 "Returns" to Largest Cable Audience of 2005

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 15:37, 7 June 2005 / People

Former STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE producer Ira Steven Behr and his team have reason to celebrate this week, as USA Network reports that the second season premiere of his new show THE 4400 bowed Sunday to the largest premiere audience for a cable show this year. Drawing 5.3 million viewers, THE 4400 is the most-watched original cable series so far for 2005.

Earning a 4.0 household rating, the two-hour broadcast Sunday also trumped all other cable competition on the night and grabbed the lead in key demos P18-49 (2.4 rating) and P25-54 (2.9 rating). The episode, "Wake Up Call", was the #1 program in all of basic cable for the night.

THE 4400 was created by Scott Peters and Behr's DS9 cohort Rene Echevarria, and follows the travails of 4,400 "returnees" from abductions over the last fifty years. The show airs Sunday nights at 9 PM, ahead of another TREK veteran offering, Michael Piller's THE DEAD ZONE, which debuts its fourth season on the network this Sunday June 12th.

Behr told TrekWeb last week that THE 4400 raised eyebrows around the industry last year when it aired as a six-hour miniseries.

"What was very nice this past development season was hearing everybody say 'we're looking for a show like THE 4400!'. It's like f--in' A, baby, we're just a little cable show!"

A little show with apparently quite a big following. THE 4400 will air new episodes through August 28th. Read Behr's full TrekWeb interview here.

Is it really that good? | Report this post to moderator

I watched the mini series and really enjoyed it. But the start of this season was poor at best.

I like the idea of this kid being "something special" but should a 6 month old have the powers to kill? If you ask me that was just too silly. Havent we seen something similar to that premise on The X Files with Moulder and Scully's kid? It's a good idea to make the series similar to The X Files but don't try and copy it exacto.

I still have hopes for this series but not many.

The 4400 is a good show and it deserves this success, unlike the insipid BSG.

DS9 Alumni Still Driving Hit Sci-Fi TV | Report this post to moderator

One wonders if Paramount has noticed that at least four of its DS9 alumni are now helming highly rated sci-fi shows on cable. I can't help wondering what the state of Star Trek would be today if Ira Steven Behr, Ron Moore, Rene Echevarria and Michael Piller were still behind the wheel. You suck, Paramount!

I wonder if the numbers will hold | Report this post to moderator

I watched the entire 4400 mini-series, although I'm not sure why. Like this new episode, I just don't think the show is very good or interesting, and I don't plan on watching any future episodes.

Here's hoping Battlestar Galactica's second season is just as well received, as no other show on TV even comes close.

Those numbers are huge! Especially considering it's normally a record if SG-1 breaks 2 million. I bet SciFi is salivating about getting some kind of rerun love.

On a side note, I didn't even know it was going to be on. Serves me right for not watching TV since Lost ended, LOL.

New "Spin-Offs" Forum | Report this post to moderator

Here's a suggestion to help TrekWeb reorganize its mission now that there's no new Trek to cover.

Even in its waning seasons, Trek still managed to shape TV scifi by serving as a kind of talent incubator for a host of terrific shows created by its various writing alumni, and starring many of its performers.

-The Dead Zone (Piller, deBoer)
-The 4400 (Behr, Echevarria, Coombs)
-Battlestar Galactica (Moore)
-Boston Legal (Shatner, Auberjonois)

TrekWeb's got a forum dedicated to the one show (BSG), but why not expand that vision to a new forum dedicated specifically to active Trek alum projects?

What would we call it?
-Academy Graduates
-Plato's Stepchildren
-Children of Time
