Former STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE producer Ira Steven Behr and his team have reason to celebrate this week, as USA Network reports that the second season premiere of his new show THE 4400 bowed Sunday to the largest premiere audience for a cable show this year. Drawing 5.3 million viewers, THE 4400 is the most-watched original cable series so far for 2005.
Earning a 4.0 household rating, the two-hour broadcast Sunday also trumped all other cable competition on the night and grabbed the lead in key demos P18-49 (2.4 rating) and P25-54 (2.9 rating). The episode, "Wake Up Call", was the #1 program in all of basic cable for the night.
THE 4400 was created by Scott Peters and Behr's DS9 cohort Rene Echevarria, and follows the travails of 4,400 "returnees" from abductions over the last fifty years. The show airs Sunday nights at 9 PM, ahead of another TREK veteran offering, Michael Piller's THE DEAD ZONE, which debuts its fourth season on the network this Sunday June 12th.
Behr told TrekWeb last week that THE 4400 raised eyebrows around the industry last year when it aired as a six-hour miniseries.
"What was very nice this past development season was hearing everybody say 'we're looking for a show like THE 4400!'. It's like f--in' A, baby, we're just a little cable show!"
A little show with apparently quite a big following. THE 4400 will air new episodes through August 28th. Read Behr's full TrekWeb interview here.
