STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE actor Cirron Lofton has come a long way since being introduced as 'Jake Sisko' in 1993's "The Emissary." At age 26, Lofton told visitors to the Enigma convention in Los Angeles this past weekend that he's about to complete a musical album.
"For me, it's a natural transformation from poetry to this," Lofton said according to Sci-Fi Wire. "I'm a rap lyricist. Rap is a very powerful tool and either can be used correctly and incorrectly, and I hope I can get my messages out there. I want it to be enjoyable, inspirational and educational."
Titled Divine Intervention, Lofton says the record - to be released through Infinity World Entertainment in September - will feature some references to his time aboard DS9.
"Sure, the Jake Sisko character will have some lines dropped in here and there. One beat will use the original STAR TREK theme song and have that beat in a hip-hop type of mode."
Lofton isn't the first STAR TREK star to venture into musical territory. William Shatner is endlessly lampooned for his Mr. Tambourine Man rendition and last year released his own "rap" on himself in a musical release produced by Ben Folds called HAS BEEN. Robert Picardo ('The Doctor') also sings and Tim Russ ('Tuvok') has released several albums with his band, even challenging Howard Stern's makeshift band on the broadcaster's radio show. Brent Spiner released an album called Old Yellow Eyes is Back during ST:TNG's fourth season, featuring background vocals by Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes ('Riker'), LeVar Burton ('Geordi'), and Michael Dorn ('Worf'), and of course Chase Masterson ('Leeta') has long performed at conventions.
Lofton says he isn't worried about the dustbin of STAR TREK musical acts goneby.
"If you don't take that risk you're stifling yourself."
