Synopsis: As two civilizations prepare for war, the secret agendas of both the Elabrej oligarchs and Klingon Imperial Intelligence may serve only to deepen the conflict - and Captain Klag of the I.K.S. Gorkon may also face a mutiny on his hands…
Review: After the spectacular debut adventures of A GOOD DAY TO DIE and HONOR BOUND, Keith R.A. DeCandido returns with the third book in his immensely popular all-Klingon STAR TREK novel series I.K.S. GORKON. ENEMY TERRITORY continues the adventures of Captain Klag, first officer Toq, second officer Rodek, operations officer Leskit, security chief Lokor, chief engineer Kurak, chief medical officer B'Oraq, and the crew of the Gorkon, as they face a new enemy threat to the Klingon Empire, one that threatens to derail the daily operations of the Gorkon and its crew. For Klag, it's nothing more than all in a day's work, and that's the way he likes it.
DeCandido introduces us to a new alien species, the Elabrej Hegemony, a most unusual alien race of beings with a very myopic view of life and existence. Viewing themselves as the only beings in the universe, the Elabrej have set their lifestyle as one we in our society can easily relate to: a race of beings devoted to the separation of church and state and just on the verge of military and scientific exploration of outer space. But their view of life is rocked with threats to their belief system, as one of their vessels is engaged in battle with an unknown alien aggressor, one whose very appearance and limited mobility is completely unlike their own. When a group of these alien aggressors are captured and held for scientific study, this shakes the Elabrej people to the core, as their very way of life is threatened. But deeper in the realms of the Elabrej society, a group of freedom fighters attempts to expose the hegemony's monopolistic view of life. It's this view of the Elabrej that DeCandido puts the mirror to and shows us uncomfortable aspects of our own society, what STAR TREK best excels in.
Of course, DeCandido nicely balances everything in the Elabrej society with the actions of his signature alien aggressor species. When Klag and the crew of the Gorkon receive word that a group of their fellow countrymen are held prisoner, they're bound and determined to rescue them, no matter the cost. On board the Gorkon, however, Klingon Imperial Intelligence agents are secretly aboard to monitor Klag's actions, and if that's not enough to keep Klag busy, deep in the bowels of the Gorkon a mutinous group of officers devoted to the old ways of Klingon society threatens to take control and expose Klag for the traitor they claim he is.
What makes ENEMY TERRITORY another winner is DeCandido's continued exploration of the many different members of the Gorkon crew. Just when you think you know everything there is to know about Klag, or Toq, or Wol, or Kurak, DeCandido pulls another targ out of his hat and surprises us in the process. That's what makes the Klingons among the richest and most intriguing of all the alien species in the STAR TREK universe.
Plots within schemes, mutinies, all on top of kick-ass action that you've come to expect from the Klingons and from the muse of Keith DeCandido. And the fun is just beginning. Qa'pla!
