Manny Coto Says Writing Was on the Wall, Talks Franchise Future

Features

By GustavoLeao / 15:08, 17 April 2005 / Enterprise

The latest issue of Cinefantastique magazine, just out in the US, features an exclusive interview with STAR TREK ENTERPRISE producer Manny Coto, in which he again talks about the show's cancellation. Here are a few excerpts :

"When I went into this season knowing we were moved to Fridays and the budget had been reduced and there was no promotion, the handwriting was kind of on the wall" he told journalist Jeff Bond "But it is sad because what we did this season was only the tip of the iceberg of what we could have done."

"My guess is that in two years some hot new show runner, someone who is popular and has established hits, will come to Paramount and say they want to do a STAR TREK series and Paramount will say terrific." Coto said "Because STAR TREK is such an enticing brand name that there are very few people out there who would not want to do it; anyone of the people running the hot action or hot sci-fi series out there would die to do a STAR TREK series and in two or three years that opportunity will be open."

Yeah, I bet UPN will want a new Trek series... | Report this post to moderator

UPN will want a new Trek series here in a couple of years to pull their shitty network out of the ratings hole that they are digging for themselves. Personally, I want the new Trek series where it belongs... in syndication! Screw UPN!

Because in 2 years or so Rick Berman's contract is done and the position is open. A current executive producer implying that a new Star Trek project will have a new showrunner (for those unclear about Hollywood terms, showrunner = executive producer) is another sign that the Berman era has mercifily come to an end.

Paramount is waiting out Berman's contract, and there will be no Berman produced Star Trek XI (thank God). The next Star Trek project, TV or film, will begin just as soon as a replacement for Berman is found, probably early 2007 just after his contract ends.

Until then, enjoy Trek reruns, BSG, Alias, 24, and the other really good shows out there right now.

Hot new series runner? | Report this post to moderator

Does he mean like J.J. Abrams? In a couple years, with Lost in season 3 and underway, and Alias likely ending (or cancelled), he'd probably be right for the post.

My only hesitation is the "reimagining" he did to Superman in his original Superman script ... ugh.
