As far as I'm concerned, the movie doesn't exist. Since it doesn't exist, Kirk still lives. In fact, they could make a new Trek film totally disregarding Generations and I'd be fine with it. Hell, at this point, who cares? They've already destroyed continuity beyond Coto's ability to repair it. If I saw a decent Enterprise story or Trek film with some good characters, dialog, story, ideas... I'd be willing to let some continuity issues slide. (Unfortunately, it seems that Coto & company are more interested in continuity porn, sacrificing good characters, story, ideas .. in the process). I mean, I sat through half of "Awakening" before I turned it off. I have never been less interested in a Trek story than during that snoozefest. Awakening, indeed... more like hibernation.
Excuse me for not jumping up and down with anticipation over this bit of almost-news. Coto must be taking lessons from Rick Berman on how to say something without really *saying* anything. It's not a matter of Shatner asking for more than Paramount is willing to pay, yet the one thing that's holding this up is money? Then, what IS the money issue about? Don't skirt the issue, Manny, be honest! Let's just admit that Shatner wants a decent piece of the pie, and Paramount's being greedy. Don't tow the company line now, when every other living soul is portraying you as some sort of renegade savior of Star Trek!
I don't care if the Lord Himself comes down from Heaven to give his blessings to this idea; as far as I'm concerned, all this is nothing more than a cheap ratings ploy to rodeo-clown people away from the real problem with Enterprise - poor writing and pathetic handling of its characters. Even if you get the REAL James T. Kirk on this episodic arc (which, I think, will be the BIGGEST and stupidest continuity f*ck-up of all time, but that's okay for everyone else, for some reason, because it's KIRK), when the arc ends, your alleged MAJOR ratings jump due to his appearance will fall back down, and Enterprise will be just as much in the ratings toilet as it's been. Nothing will be miraculously made better, and nothing will be redeemed.
I'll be skipping this episodic arc if it happens, because I am so COMPLETELY against it. It's an act of desperation, it's a dumb idea, and it won't fix a damn thing, and no one has anything to say that can make me feel otherwise.
As long as everyone's floating ridiculous scenarios, how about this:
Captain Kirk, long retired from Starfleet, is kidnapped by the Peanut People from Pluto and thrown into the Guardian of Forever. He ends up in the year 2150 on board Jonathan Archer's Enterprise. But this was never supposed to happen, so Captain LaForge from the early 25th century travels back in time to fix the damage to history. In LaForge's timeline, Kirk died saving that planet from Dr. Soren and the Nexus, and Kirk never was a long retired Captain. So Kirk, Archer and LaForge defeat the Peanut People and save the 24th century "as we know it." Kirk fades away as the "real" timeline takes shape, and Archer forgets the whole thing ever happened.

GET A LIFE, will you people? I mean, for crying out loud, it's just a TV show!.... You've turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME! -- William Shatner on Saturday Night Live (1986)
All I have to say, is if they do this, make it be the REAL Kirk and undo what they did in Generations. I dont want a Mirror Mirror Universe Kirk, or his Great Grandfather or anything else lame.
On Darkhorizons yesterday it was stated that Shatner had reached a deal to appear on Enterprise but I have yet to find a confirmation concering this. Cross your fingers.
Ok. Now I am officially hopeful again that we will see Bill on Ent. I am not the Berman hater many are here, but he does seem to embellish a bit. Manny has some good will with me and so if he is optimistic, then I am hopeful.
Oh, and I am also hopeful that if there is a new movie down the pike, that Manny has a strong influence on that (or DS9 guys). I am wondering yet if Berman and Paramount will let Braga move on to some other non-Trek stuff and leave Trek to Coto for the creation stuff and Berman for the money stuff.

I don't understand what the hell is taking so long with making this deal. Coto says Shatner is not asking a lot and the studios offer is ok. So what the hell is the problem?
