Producer Manny Coto Talks Brent Spiner's 'Soong' Arc, Plus His Vision for ENT Season Four

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 04:51, 18 August 2004 / Enterprise

In a new interview here at TrekWeb, STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE excecutive producer Manny Coto says he has a specific vision for the show's fourth season.

"My vision is to try to fulfill what I think is ENTERPRISE’s promise, which is to create a truly prequel series," Coto explains. "And that is to being to tie ENTERPRISE into the overall STAR TREK canon and to really use the opportunity that we have to create stories that give us a glimpse into the formation of the STAR TREK universe."

He also revealed that the 'Arik Soong' arc now in production and guest starring Brent Spiner ('Data') originally had a ST:TOS inspiration.

"When we found out that Brent was interested we tried to tailor it to him, and having seen the dailies he’s terrific in this part," he says. "For a little while I even toyed with the idea of him playing Colonel Green, but I think he’s more interesting playing this character."

For much more, including Coto's discussion of new writers Alan Brennert and Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, William Shatner's possible appearance, and the upcoming Vulcan story arc, check out the full interview.

Colonel Green rocks!!

Also, why is it when a Democrat massively breaks wind in an elevator, they expect you to inhale deeply, to take in the essence of their wisdom?

If Manny Coto knows about Col. Green then he's been watching TOS to get some ideas for episodes. I mean, that character ain't exactly well known by the general populace like, say, Khan. That alone impresses me. It looks like he's actually doing his job and trying to make this a true prequel series.

I do think however, they can do too much "name dropping" from TOS because if everybody knows everybody else then kind of gets ridiculous and unbelievable...like having relatives of established characters from other series in every other episode.

So, hopefully they will do this enough to make it convincing and effective but not go over the top with it...

Now, proceed to ignore my opinion. :)

As I noted in the interview thread - unless some unusual plot device is deployed (cloning, advanced being, flashback, time travel, cryogenics, etc), Colonel Green is a 21st century entity, NOT a 22nd century (ENT-era) entity.

Coto has a big job ahead. ;-)

There have been 76 episodes of ENT after 3 seasons. Few of these begin to richly develop the 22nd century and I am hoping this "vision" looks to build on what we know about this time - and this includes the "new" World Government on Earth that we discover per TNG "Attached" (written by Carl Sagan's son Nick), was finalized around the time of 2150, ie., where Beverly Crusher, in debating Picard regarding the membership aspirations of a planet they were about to deal with, noted the following (which I have posted before several times):

"Think about Earth -- what if one of the old nation-states, say Australia, had decided not to join the World Government in 2150? Would that have disqualified us from being a Federation member?

Ie., this was an analogy in reference to some of the discord happening on the planet at the center of their next mission. We know that ALL "nation-states" on Earth joined this new Earth government and this happened BEFORE the Federation was actually founded.

But the key here is that the creation of the new Earth World Government happened RIGHT DURING ENT'S TIMEFRAME (hint hint Manny... ;-)).

--------

"I think the show talked to people through the characters. They're stories that speak to the heart. They talk about love, they talk about friendship, they talk about loyalty, they talk about patriotism, exploration, curiosity, reaching out... And I think all those things still touch people. Even when you look at a 30-year old show, it still has something to say." - D.C. Fontana, Sci Fi Channel Special Edition TOS 1998

----

"If the season finale involves the re-built USS Reliant coming back in time to the 21st Century crewed by Moogie, Dr. Selar, Morn, Transporter Chief Kyle, and the Salt Vampire, then we'll know that Coto has gone too far." - tomba1701
