TREK Authors and Shatner Co-Writers Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens Beam Aboard ENT

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 12:36, 6 August 2004 / Enterprise

The new-look STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE continues to take shape for the upcoming fourth season. Just as new executive producer Manny Coto has promised to bring more ORIGINAL SERIES and NEXT GENERATION ties to the stories on the prequel series, the show now welcomes two writers eminently qualified to deliver on that promise.

TrekWeb has confirmed that Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens have joined ENTERPRISE as story editors. The Reeves-Stevenses are two of the STAR TREK fiction world's best authors, having written six original TREK novels, four non-fiction entries, and more. They're also well-known for their contribution to the eight 'Captain Kirk' novels co-written by William Shatner: THE ASHES OF EDEN, THE RETURN, AVENGER, SPECTRE, DARK VICTORY, PRESERVER, CAPTAIN'S PERIL, and CAPTAIN'S BLOOD. The ninth novel in the series, CAPTAIN'S GLORY, is scheduled for release in 2005.

The Kirk novels are well-known for bringing the various eras of STAR TREK together, putting Kirk with other characters like 'Picard' in adventures that span the galaxy and tie in with innumerable elements of STAR TREK continuity. One of the sharpest criticisms of the prequel series has been its fast-and-loose adherence to established STAR TREK canon, a phenomenon that can often doom franchise-based television series and feature films. Most recently, the new film CATWOMAN was derided by fans of the comic for deviating from the source material; the film made a poor showing at the box office. The intricate knowledge and sometimes obsessive dedication that franchise fans possess has moved into the mainstream, with Hollywood courting fan favor at huge events like the San Diego Comic Con and reaching unparallelled success with adaptations like the SPIDER-MAN and X-MEN films.

The Reeves-Stevens' other TREK novels include FEDERATION, PRIME DIRECTIVE, MEMORY PRIME, and the DEEP SPACE NINE: MILLENNIUM trilogy. Their non-fiction STAR TREK books include THE MAKING OF STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE, THE ART OF STAR TREK, STAR TREK: PHASE II - THE LOST SERIES, and STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION - THE CONTINUING MISSION. In addition, they also wrote an issue of the illustrated NEXT GENERATION comic series for DC Comics. In 2003 they provided a new interview for the Pocket Books omnibus collection WORLDS IN COLLISION, a trade paperback compilation of MEMORY PRIME and PRIME DIRECTIVE. One of their next projects with William Shatner will be the recently-announced STARFLEET ACADEMY novels featuring a young James T. Kirk.

In addition to their STAR TREK work, the Reeves-Stevenses have served as supervising producers on the syndicated TV series SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE'S THE LOST WORLD and have written for animated series including FLASH GORDON, PHANTOM 2040, and BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, as well as a made-for-TV movie, MY TEACHER ATE MY HOMEWORK. Their non-TREK novels include QUICKSILVER, ICEFIRE, DARK MATTER, NIGHTEYES, CHILDREN OF THE SHROUD, DREAMLAND, BLOODSHIFT, the ALIEN NATION novel DAY OF DESCENT, and the GALEN SWORD trilogy. Most recently they wrote the animated direct-to-DVD feature VAN HELSING: THE LONDON ASSIGNMENT.

You can read more about the Reeves-Stevens at their official web site.

Season 4 sounds great. Coto's recent comments have had me excited, and this is the icing on the cake.
Coto and the Reeves-Stephens abviously understand what makes Trek work, and it's apppeal. I think season 4 is gonna be great.

I'm not a big fan of Trek books, unless written by Peter David. HOWEVER, I did read JUDITH & GARFIELD STEVENS ICEFIRE. That book is simply incredible. Absolutely amazing.

I can't say enough about ICEFIRE. I read it and was floored. I couldn't really believe it was as good as it was. I have actually resented their involvement in TREK, because it keeps them from writing more books like ICEFIRE. THey also wrote QUICKSILVER, similar in quality to ICEFIRE.

If you like MATTHEW REILLEY you'll love ICEFIRE. It's way better than any TOM CLANCY novel too. Check out people's reviews on Amazon.

The news about Season 4 keeps getting more and more intriguing with all the new people behind the scenes.

I've only read the Millennium Trilogy by the Reeves-Stevens, but I absolutely loved it and count it among the best Trek novels that I have personally read.

However, I have avoided the Shatner-verse novels simply because the plot descriptions sound so fanfic-ish. Even among the growing inner-continuity of the Trek literature of the last four years they have not been included. But I guess people love them though since I can never find a copy at the used book stores.

The smartest move Paramount has done in over 15 years.

This means that Shatners books are as a good as canon.

The return of Kirk written by Shatner, Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens is going to be the highlight of S4 and the best episode this series is ever going to do!

I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming when I read this..... Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens! I can't believe it! I've read most of their Shatner novels (except for the most recent ones, Captain's Peril and Captain's Blood) and I recently read their DS9 Millenium trilogy. I don't have their TOS novels yet (any good) and I don't really plan on reading Federation since it contradicts cannon (not their fault).

Anywho, I'm really excited. These guys really know what they're doing and they know Trek continuity well. This, combined with Manny Coto taking over as head writer next season is really getting me psyched to see what they're gonna do with S3. I'm already excited about the first few episodes we know about.

Who knows, maybe they'll even write the episode where Shatner returns (if he does) - it wouldn't surprise me, since they've done a lot of work with him. I'm looking forward to their Starfleet Academy novel, it should be an interesting read.

Good freakin' move. First Alan Brennert, now the Reeves-Stevenses. This is what I've always said Trek should try--they should've done this from the start of the series. Only thing better than this would be to snag Peter David, too.

I have most of their Trek books up on my multiple book shelves, including Shatner's 6 (and I plan to start getting the ones in their 3rd trilogy, that's for sure) and "Federation" and "Prime Directive" and... and....

I can't believe this. I must be dreaming.

On the surface this seems like it's great news and I'm excited by the idea...
...but...
They write novels, I am just wondering if they have the talent to take a story idea and tell that story in 40 pages(TV scripts are usually one minute of screen time per page).
Just a thought.

as for listening to fans that shouldn't be the case all the time. not all fan ideas are great.

Continuity has always been a hallmark of their work.

will they write? | Report this post to moderator
By: W Epemenundus Edrastus Blab (Odo's file, contact) @ 14:22:47 on Aug 06, 2004

I assume they are not being entrusted with scripts yet. Coto will probably give them a chance to do an episode to see how they'll do. That will be the one to watch. It will be strange to hear Archer and crew mouth lines penned by genuine and purely creative writers.

Is this the first time since TOS that novelists will write a script.

The plot thickens.... | Report this post to moderator
By: NX-47 (Odo's file, contact) @ 14:15:07 on Aug 06, 2004

Just last night I posted a talkback about Shatner's new book in the works about Starfleet Academy, and any possible connection to the 'prequel' movie that B&B are supposedly working on.

Now, given this development, it almost seems a foregone conclusion that they are all working together on the 'prequel movie' supposedly set in the Starfleet Academy. If so, then this seems to be an even clearer statement that TPTB are listening to the fans more than ever before, and also seem truly committed to getting the franchise back to the roots that made it great in the first place.

My optimism is growing.... :-)

By: JanS (Odo's file, contact) @ 12:59:21 on Aug 06, 2004

These guys know how to plot, and they know how to "do a job", particularliy how to work within set confines of what the fictional universe or a boss (like Shatner) may demand. They do have a tendency to tell BIG stories concerning the big political problems etc. which might be suited to the mini arc approach of the new season (but would be even better suited to movies). Their books always have a screenplay like quality, and they certainly know about production issues from their research on the "making of" books. (They already know Rick Berman and many members of the production crew.) I'm very happy, but of course Peter David would have been a good choice as well. He wrote some more screenplays and teleplays (Bab5), not to mention lots of great Trek novels, most of which had all the qualities that a television producers are looking for (interesting characters, good dialogue, limited scope).
