'T'Pol' Faces New Challenge at "Home", Plus the Newest NX Ship - First Plot Details (SPOILERS)

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 19:48, 23 July 2004 / Enterprise

Jolene Blalock let the cat out of the bag during this week's fall press tour: 'T'Pol' may be getting married. In fact, TrekWeb has received the first information on the third episode of the season in which the big event might occur, entitled simply "Home."

In the episode, slated to begin production August 4th under the direction of Allan Kroeker (who is also directing the season premiere "Storm Front, Part 1", credits), T'Pol will face her mother 'T'Las', who along with another family has arranged a Vulcan marriage for the Enterprise science officer. Producers are reportedly looking for an actress in her 60s are are open to "stunt" casting for the role.

UPN president Dawn Ostroff said earlier this week that the network would like to land popular performers in ENTERPRISE guest roles this season; TNG's Brent Spiner is already onboard for a three-part stint, and Shatner talks is omnipresent.

T'Pol's husband-to-be goes by the name of 'Koss' and looks in his late 30s by human standards. Koss is reminiscient of 'Spock', tall and imposing. But T'Pol -- as you can probably imagine -- is unsure whether to go through with the betrothal. Both T'Las and Koss could appear in later episodes.

In addition, we'll also meet the newest NX-class member of the fleet in "Home." The commemoratively-named Starship Columbia is captained by 'Erika Hernandez', a sexy Latin former colleague of 'Archer's from Starfleet's command school.

Rick Berman stated this week that the third episode of the season would be a standalone before launching into the three-part storyline focusing on Spiner as 'Arik Soong', the great-great-grandfather of 'Noonien Soong' (Data's creator) who attempts to continue the work of geneticists with embryos left over from the Eugenics Wars (story).

Until this information if confirmed by Paramount (or blurted out by one of the producers), it should be treated as rumor. "Home" will air in October.

Explaining the "No Female Captains" thing. | Report this post to moderator
By: Darth Brooks (Odo's file, contact) @ 16:13:49 on Jul 24, 2004

All it takes to explain how there are female starship captains in the mid-22nd century but not in the mid-23rd is a little imagination.

It's entirely possible that that reason for the "no female captains" rule is diplomatic or scientific rather than chauvanistic.

One off-the-cuff example:

Federation scientists determine that the vast majority of alien species in the galaxy have not yet achieved the level of gender-equality enjoyed by the member species of the Federation; therefore, unfortunately, dealing with these aliens necessitates a male captain. The Federation doesn't discriminate against women, but they are smack dab in the middle of a galaxy that does. Therefore, with new species being encountered every day and an unusually high incidence of attacks of Starfleet ships with female captains (through no fault of their own), Starfleet has to put a hold on new female captaincies until such time as it can be determined how to overcome this problem.

Make no mistake - we're trying to explain an ideoligical difference between the 1960's and the 2000's within the context of two TV shows that both take place in the future... but my policy has always been: rather than throw my hands up in the air over minor continuity matters like this, if I can come up with one reasonable explanation as to how the continuity break can make sense, it's one I can forgive.

Hey, what about that Vulcan AIDS T'Pol got? I thought she was outcast in their society. I mean, ignore the continuity of other series, but at least keep your own straight!

Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

In ENT Breaking the Ice, T'Pol says her fiancé is named Koss. So, we may see some "ex-boyfriend turns stalker" episodes. ;-)

Hi, I'm Captain Sexy! | Report this post to moderator

Ditto on the "no female captains" of Turnabout Intruder. Geez. I mean, it WAS a bad episode, but still...

But bigger than that: I love that she's a SEXY female captain. As if there were any other kind.

And finally...

Hm. NX-01 has been in service for three years. Will it ever stop being an experimental platform and get a commission (and therefore an in-service registry number)? Because if this "next NX starship" is the same class as Enterprise, it would seem to make more sense for it to be NCC-02 or some such. After all, NX-2000 became NCC-2000 (USS Excelsior) after her trials were done...and subsequent Excelsior-class vessels weren't NX-2001, etc.

hop to it, gentlemen.

Actress to cast | Report this post to moderator

As for the mature actress to cast for T'Pol's mother, how about Majel Barrett-Roddenberry? She played Number One with a stern, unemotional manner befitting of a Vulcan.

Sounds good, but a female captain in the 22nd c? | Report this post to moderator

Sounds a promising season thus far.

Didn't "Turnabout Intruder" establish that there were no female captains in Starfleet at that point in the 23rd century? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but Janice Lester's whole obsession with Captain Kirk was based on not only love for him, but jealousy of his captaincy because she could never be a captain in Starfleet.

She says a line, to the effect of "Your world of Starship captains doesn't allow women."

Are we now saying that episode is non-canon?

Are all of these spoilers from the cast and crew stealing your thunder Steve? Just kidding! Sounds good. Almost like TNG's "Family". It sounds like it takes place on Earth. I am very glad that we will be seeing the Columbia and I am impressed that it has a female captain. I wonder if we will be seeing the NX-02 appear in any of the major story arcs this year?
