As with all things, I won't be able to pass judgment until I see the episodes.
Poor Brent. His ego so big on the last two movies and insisted Data be killed off because he was through with Trek and now this.
Spiner and Stewart always seem to complain about this and that when interviewed even though it made them stars but I am guessing now that the money is running a bit dry he is changing his tune.
This is a horrible idea and it may make the rating go up while he's on but what about afterwards????

Think of it this way....
everyone of us has 4 grandparents 8 great grandparents and 16 great great granparents. The farther back in time you go, the more the likelyhood of you running into one of them. ENT is set 200 years before TNG. So, it is quite possible that of the Thousands of charcters that TRek has introduced us to, we are bound to run into a few of their ancestors. Also, if you look at a lot of US family traditions of "the son serving in the Military just like daddy and granddaddy", wouldn't it be possible that you'd run into a few of the ancestors of the Human Starfleet officers we already know of?
Now, I'd like to point out that I agree that it would be sloppy writing if they continued to use this type of storyline just to bring in familiar faces. However, to my recollection This would only be the second time we have run into an ancestor. The first being Duras. With this being only the second time, I have no problem with it. But, it should be the last time its used. If they want to bring in other characters, find someway else to do it.

I like the idea of Enterprise using somebody like Spiner or Shatner to represent the ancestor of their characters. However, the writing crew needs to be careful not to overdo this idea. Fans as a whole won't respect that kind of writing, and its just too much of a marketing ploy. TNG did this with brilliance. McCoy's appearance was a fantastic moment for the premier episode; Spocks episode was clever, and fit in well with the 25th anniv. and the releasoe of Trek VI (again, a marketing ploy); Scotty's was just a fun episode.
The one I like best though was Sarek. His two TNG appearances were by far the best because he wasn't a character that made the original series. But rather he was an important element. It would be really cool (if the math works) to see a young Sarek on ENT before he became the wise ambassador, and what/who lead him to that role with the Federation. That kind of setup, if done carefully, would probably reap more interest and credibility than most.
You hate everything before it's even been seen. Your all bitching about TREK XI before a frame has been shot. You complain about Spiner, an actor I thought we all liked.
If the Wrath of Kahn had just opened for the first time today it would bomb because you judgemental so-called "fans" hate esverything to do with TREK. Even when ENTERPRISE turns in a great episode you STILL complain. THis has gotten ridiculous. It's like your all on a crusade to end TREK.
TREK XI could be good or could suck. We won't know til we hear more. I give them credit, though --- they are trying something different. After the bombing of TREK IX and X that is welcome. Spiner on ENTERPRISE? I like Spiner. Will the shows be good? Depends on the scripts, so again --- not enough info to judge yet. Still, that has never stopped people here.
I'm not saying to be a Stepford fan and accept all TREK without judgement. If it really sucks then say so. NEMESIS and VOYAGER both sucked, and I have no problem saying so. You people have become such self parody, though. Your reverse Stepford fans who hate everything before you have seen it or have all the info. Take the people who jumped down Braga's throat last week because he said the Eugenics wars would be touched on on ENTERPRISE. People condemned him because the Eugenics wars happened in the 90s, not Archer's time ---- nevermind the fact that nowwhere in the entire article did it ever say the wars would take place in Archer's time. All it said was they were developing a story that had to do with th Eugenics wars. Guess what? So did CLASSIC TREK. The episode was called "Space Seed" The wars didn't start in Kirk's time but they did an episode that involved them.
I don't even know if you all realize how much of a self-parody you've all become. Your like a collection of Magnoliafans and WompaOnes from JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK.
Data was a good character, but bringing back a twice removed ancestor is pushing it a bit, especially for three episodes. Kirk is a special case, I hope it doesn't open the floodgates for more of this. Is there any point in saying that no one seems to have any faith in this show (Enterprise) succeeding based on its own merits! We have heard that the TCW will be wrapped up early in the season, despite it never really having been explained: Who's behind it; what kind of technology do they use; Who is Daniels?; What changes in time have they made before; Why does Enterprise have superior technology to TOS; Why no Romulan Wars? I'll watch the show, and I do like Spiner/Data, but I don't think a Soong appearance will boost things much.
Why not just start bringing back all the characters from the other shows? This is getting a little ridiculous.
We are near the end. The franchise is now way beyond 'jumping the shark'. If B&B had a lame horse they would:
1) Shoot it, but make sure it's still alive.
2) Let the animal suffer and open it up to the public while selling tickets.
3) Burn the animal and listen to it scream in agony.
4) Take the ashes and try to sell them for syndication.
The notion that the franchise is honorable enough to deserve a decent death is beyond these guys.

I was elated when I read reports that Brannon Braga would be transitioning control of Enterprise to someone else. This report, however, now has me convinced that he'd determined to ride this travesty he's created down to the bitter end and then blame the fans when the cancellation notice comes. Paramount needs to remember that this is the guy who said "If you don't like the theme song, change the channel." And people did, they just didn't change it back after the song was over. He's an incompetent idiot who needs to be put out to pasture. One day, in a few decades perhaps, someone will come to power at Paramount and recognize the imbeciles these two are (Berman and Braga) and look to people like Robert Wolfe and Ira Behr. It please me to no end to see that The 4400 was very will received by the critics and based on the first episode, delivered as promised. I hope the powers that be at Paramount take a chance to look at the competition coming out on USA Network and the Sci-Fi Channel because that's what people are watching. Well written stories. Not the trash these two are turning out.
It seems as though Berman is trying to do the right thing. Clearly, someone has a lot of confidence in Braga as well. I don't know if they'll actually be able to do something worthwhile this time. History has made me pessimistic.
Are these guys finally coming to grips with the fact that STAR TREK means a carefully combined set of different elements are succesful for it's success? These guys can either take the route that has been laid out for them by virtue of an immense backstory and random mentions of history, or they can try and go the "original" route and ensure failure due to an understanding of STAR TREK which is different than the fans who watch the TV shows regularly.
There needs to be a quantum difference between what they're planning to do and what they've already created. They have another shot at actually making STAR TREK fans happy again, I hope they don't blow it again.
However, the big news would be that both B+B are not involved with TREK anymore. I think great numbers of people would check out TREK without these guys, just to see what it was like. If B+B-less TREK were actually good and hit the right notes with viewers, it's success would be insane. Otherwise, it may just do well enough to justify more mediocre TREK, which we've had under B+B already, so it couldn't hurt to change the producers.

Not Spiner again! I wonder if he'll insist on co-writing the episodes as well.
Yes he played Soong in a few eps of TNG but he was CRAP! He puts on a silly voice and it's called acting, yet he has the same facial expressions as his android character.
I've tried not to bag out B&B too much but they really are grasping at straws here. IF they have to bring back anyone from any other Trek series why not a new incarnation of Dax? At least there could be some plausible way to do it, or even Guinan, but leave TNG alone.
It may be the most popular of the Trek series but it's not the saviour of all of them.
I'd say they're finally acknowledging that the vast majority of Trek fans no longer watch the show. This isn't a ratings stunt aimed at the general public, it's aimed at the fans who have stopped watching.
That said, it only seems like a rumor to me.

"You have reached Ritual Sacrifice! To sacrifice a pet or loved one, Press 1. To sacrifice a goat, Press 2, or say 'Goat' now..."
That's what this ridiculous bit of stunt casting looks like. The grandfather of Dr. Soong? Sigh.....and why does he merit appearing in 3 episodes? What's next - the great-great-great-grandfather of Dr. Zimmerman? A distant cousin 20 times removed of Barclay?
The depths of lameness to which BermanTrek has sunk are almost beyond words at this point. Just when you thought turning Janeway and Paris into salamanders and having them mate was as low as they could go...just when you thought alien nazis were as low as they could go...they find new ways to further humiliate the franchise.
And Berman's refutation of Keating's assertions about Braga? Looking for Keating's character to be marginalized and all but forgotten in the next season, just as they did with Chakotay when Beltran dared to criticize the show.
How many grandfathers are we gonna see on ENT? First Data's. Next it'll be Kirk (already in discussion). How soon before we see Geordi's, Crusher's, Troi's, etc.
Use the actors, but let's see some original characters from them. That's not to say I don't want to see "Data's" grandfather. Just keep it at a minimum.
And as for Shatner? I want to see KIRK, not Kirk's grandfather.
Well I'm kind of interested because it's not as if they could really screw up any backstory or characters with this. Then again, that's probably because Berman already screwed up Soong when he wrote "Brothers."

Kor: You of the Federation, you are much like us.
Kirk: We're nothing like you. We're a democratic body.
Kor: Come now Captain, I'm not referring to minor ideological differences. I mean that we are similar as a species. Here we are on a planet of sheep, two tigers, predators, hunters... killers. And it is precisely that which makes us great. And there is a universe to be taken.

Spiners coming back. ummmm Yet they won't do anymore TNG movies. Instead of doing this ridiculous prequel RW movie.
Brannon not standing back. Well I blame "SaveEnterprise" for this. They had everyones ear and they didn't say "Get rid of executives". They said how much they like the show etc and this just gave B&B grounds to stay in their bosses eyes.
SO WAY TO GO PEOPLE... NO NEW BLOOD OR CHANGE IN TREK THANKS TO THESE PEOPLE!!!!!
For all of the negative stuff I post here about ENTERPRISE, I gotta admit that this could be a neat concept, if done well.
