Rick Berman: "Prequel" Film in the Works, Plus Developing New Series With Braga

Features

By Steve Krutzler / 12:42, 22 April 2004 / General Star Trek

After over a year of silence on the future of the STAR TREK feature film franchise, producer Rick Berman has finally dropped the first hints of a new theatrical project for the franchise. The news comes in the new issue of Dreamwatch magazine, just coming out in the UK.

Speaking in issue #117, Berman confirms for the first time that he is now developing a STAR TREK feature film project: "I am involved in the very early stages of what could be the next STAR TREK movie," reveals Berman, in an excerpt provided by Dreamwatch. "It's something I will be producing with two other producers."

Unwilling to offer many details he cryptically describes it as "a prequel" without any further elaboration. The names of his producing cohorts will have to remain unknown for now, as well. This follows a report earlier this week from Dark Horizons that Paramount may be working on a project the site described as "Starfleet Command." Coincidentially, former TREK producer Harve Bennett (STAR TREKs II-VI) revealed recently that several years ago he had pitched a Starfleet Academy-based STAR TREK movie concept.

On the television front, while the future of their first series remains in limbo, Berman confirms that he is developing a non-STAR TREK sci-fi series with partner Brannon Braga. Both Berman and Braga have development deals with Paramount. If a new series begins development in earnest, TrekWeb insiders suggest Berman and/or Braga might take a reduced role in a fourth season of ENTERPRISE, though this is entirely speculation.

For the full interview and much more, check out issue #117 of Dreamwatch magazine in the United Kingdom.

Fan Films Doing the Job | Report this post to moderator
By: FLTREK (Odo's file, contact) @ 10:08:43 on Apr 27, 2004

Oh man not more prequel stuff, this guy doesn't have an original idea in his head. He's already doing Enterprise, now he wants to screw-up TOS stuff.

Personally I think fan film stuff like New Voyages or Exeter (NV seems to be better IMHO)do the job of TOS expansion quite well. Berman probably saw that New Voyages has something like 4 million downloads and realized what the fans like seeing (when it's done well)

NV is at www.5yearmission.com and Exeter is at www.starshipexeter.com

Prequel to What? | Report this post to moderator
By: Nuclearmothman (Odo's file, contact) @ 15:58:20 on Apr 26, 2004

The idea of a prequel is not bad in and of itself, it's all in how it's handled. And I'm not even opposed to the idea of a Starfleet Academy movie with the TOS characters recast. (Harrison Ford is still Indiana Jones, but four other actors have also played the part too.) But just in seeing how badly Berman and Braga have trashed Trek history with "Enterprise" is enough to give me pause and worry about this possible prequel.

May be more than meets the eye... | Report this post to moderator
By: V'Ger (Odo's file, contact) @ 03:18:46 on Apr 26, 2004

If this is more than just a rumour, what if the other two producers are outsiders brought in to "fix" the franchise? This of course happened after TMP when Bennett was brought in to replace Roddenberry. Roddenberry could not be officially excluded for legal and fan support reasons, but he was relegated to a role in which he had no real influence. Perhaps something similar is happening here... Berman may have some contractual right to be part of any new ST production, but if so they could probably give him a token title and then ignore him.

I'm not opposed in principle to a prequel if it is handled well. "The Lost Era" novel series demonstrates how much potential a prequel concept can have if handled properly. I wouldn't want to see any established characters recast with younger actors though.

This is the same Dreamwatch magazine that said Star Trek 9 was Data vs Lore movie and would be like the wrath of khan.

Just because a magazine says so; doesn't make it true.

My reaction: bollocks!

But knowing B&B, it'll probably be just be the same old regurgitated pablum.

This is ridiculous. NEMESIS flopped. ENTERPRISE flopped. Entertainment critics are saying they're over Star Trek. OVER Star Trek. So by all means, lets start work on ANOTHER movie. Give it a REST! I never thought I'd see the day when I'd keep saying that, but GIVE STAR TREK A REST!! Please, Paramount, it may only be another line in the ol' ledger book for you guys, but for thous—MILLIONS of other people it's something we unabashedly love. WE'VE made it the most profitable franchise in history, not YOU. And you're taking our loyalty for granted. You are killing something I've had in my life since I was born! WHY? Why not wait twice the amount of time you normally would, build up an appetite in the mainstream and the fan base, and put the budgets you would have spread out over two—or three films TOGETHER and make one GREAT one?! Crap + crap just equals twice as much crap! Plus, Berman, if he MUST be involved, could obviously use the extra time to get it right.

Quote:""I am involved in the very early stages of what could be the next STAR TREK movie," reveals Berman, in an excerpt provided by Dreamwatch. "It's something I will be producing with two other producers.""

WHY!?!?!?! WHY is this idiot doing another movie? WHY is he involved? There is NO way I am going to see another Berman Trek FLOP! I strongly suggest others to boycott this flop now and save yourself $12 bucks and 2 hrs of your life.

A prequel movie???? WHO THE HELL wants to see that? ANSWER: NO ONE! No one cares about the "prequel series" Why the hell would they waste their time on a prequel movie? Is this going to be a Kirk movie? Another way for Berman to fuck over the Kirk character? HOW much longer can Paramount go on making BONEHEAD decisions after BONEHEAD decisions before they realize that they have screwed Star Trek over so badly that it is beyond dead? How much more "Star Wars prequel bandwagon" are they going to do?

WHY is he producing another Trek move? Paramount must be filled with morons. They have yet to learn the lesson of the "Berman touch of death" when it comes to anything Trek.

Another point I would like to make is this. WHY THE HELL IS RICK BERMAN STILL WORKING ON TREK? What happened with that nice rumor of him getting fired after the March sweeps? What kind of blackmail pictures does Berman have over his bosses where they can't fire this asshole?

Quote:"On the television front, while the future of their first series remains in limbo, Berman confirms that he is developing a non-STAR TREK sci-fi series with partner Brannon Braga."

The series is in limbo YET they have the time to develop another show? Well this just goes to show you that the idiots of Trek don't give a shit about Trek and have both "moved on".

Fire these two idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Replacement for ENT | Report this post to moderator
By: rfjason (Odo's file, contact) @ 00:59:13 on Apr 23, 2004

It's so simple: Berman and Braga are being allowed to produce another sci-fi show as a replacement for ENT.

ENT will probably get renewed for another season, it's ratings will continue to falter, and this backup show will be ready to go as a mid-season replacement, or a new-season replacement.

Mark my words. UPN is hedging it's bets.

Paramount is nuts... | Report this post to moderator
By: dx31701 (Odo's file, contact) @ 22:40:28 on Apr 22, 2004

So Berman spends at least a decade bleeding off audience, creativity and profitability and gets a new show? Most fans didn't want a prequel film a decade ago when it was first picthed and that's what they may get? Berman and Braga have spent ten years showing that they have no clue what makes a sci-fi show work and the show they're getting is sci-fi?

Go Paramount.

Maybe the problem is deeper than Berman - maybe folks like Sherry Lansing or some other studio execs need to be canned and replaced with someone who won't keep proven failures on payroll just because they're friends of the family (which has been said of Lansing and Berman).

Personally, if B&B were to take a back seat for a fourth season I think it could be great. Imagine how limited DS9 would have been if Berman had meddled with it the way he did Voyager. Ira Behr has already stated that Berman didn't want the Dominion War to last more than a few episodes. Because he was engrossed with Voyager Behr did whatever he wanted and brought us the best years any Trek series ever had, in my opinion. If Enterprise gets a fourth season and B&B were out of the loop, I think it would have a better chance at revitalizing the show and the franchise and show the powers the be what a pair of idiots these two are, in my opinion.

Regards,
Brad

Well, this sure is a surprise.

After the reaction to Nemesis, I really thought the whole movie franchise was dead. I'll have to go back and look at that AICN rumor. Unless the story really did mean Starfleet Academy? Perhaps Picard's Academy days?

Though Steve if I may suggest, I'd point out in the story headline that that series will be a NON-Trek series. I was doing a double take when I saw that.
