ENT Developing "Stratagem" for Creative Success as Deus Likes Second in a Row

Title: "Stratagem"

Overall: 8.5
Performances: 8.5
Writing: 8
Direction: 7.5
FX & Prod Value: 7

Synopsis: Enterprise captures the creator of the Xindi weapon and with time running out try to trick him into revealing the weapon's location.

Review: "Stratagem" is both a strong episode in and of itself and a worthy follow-up to "Proving Ground" as part of the Xindi arc. More intriguingly, "Stratagem" is an ENTERPRISE that plays out more like an episode ALIAS.

By committing to the premise of the third season in which Earth and humanity face the threat of imminent extermination, ENT created the problem of a threat that required extreme measures. "Anomaly" is about as far as a STAR TREK series is likely to take the idea of a Starfleet Captain using force to extract information. "Stratagem" does an ingenious end run around the problem by creating a logically worked out situation in which the solution is both ruthless and non-violent.

But at the same time, "Stratagem" also gives us one of the most human villains to date in terms of our ability to empathize with him. Randy Oglesby's 'Degra' is a fully realized character who is well aware of the moral consequences of his actions and manages to get across the character's emotions in a way that is shocking for a character who never seemed particularly significant or distinctive in earlier episodes. When Degra realizes what he has done in giving away the location on the bridge, his face falls and as perverse as it might be we can empathize with his pain at what he sees as his betrayal of his people.

It is ironic that "Stratagem" is essentially a holodeck episode minus the holodeck but that it manages to succeed far better than most holodeck episodes. Like Moriarty in "Ship in a Bottle," the premise involves a ship within a ship and an illusion within an illusion. But unlike that TNG episode, the goal is not to untangle all the layers of illusion but the interaction between Archer and Degra. Two characters both utterly determined and driven by the fear of a terrible future and the moral compromises they have had to make. And both lying to each other and suppressing their feelings to make themselves as cold and hard as they have to be to do what they believe needs to be done.

Visually the debris of the proving ground serve as both a plausible tool for Enterprise's malfunction without resorting to technobabble, and a credible source of tension whjile the incoming Xindi ship serves as a reminder for the destructive force Degra has unleashed.

Michael Sussman's teleplay and veteran STAR TREK director Mike Vejar bring together their talents to create an episode that flows seamlessly and smoothly without any noticeable gaps to its conclusion. Like "Proving Ground" before it, "Stratagem" has a momentum that the Xindi arc has lacked until now. It's another triumph of efficency in storytelling for ENTERPRISE, overcoming many of the obstacles that have traditionally held the series back.

This was a tedious and painfully obvious episode. I really don't know what all the plaudits are about.

And it appears the standards will be maintained this coming week with Vulcan butt cheeks making a guest appearance.

And I for one am getting pig-sick of this 'inch-by-inch' Xindi plotline.

Trek this year has been left standing in the 1990's by the new Galactica show.

With cancellation clearly just weeks away, Enterprise is dying a painful death.

It appears that the best of this season's story telling has been saved for last. Clever strategy twice in one episode?! The tension of the story resolution was allowed to build slowly and evenly through the episode. And again, T'Pol proves she's the best damn officer on Enterprise. Never competing for command but consistently demonstrating she is always more than capable to command and able to keep an action together.

Another very good episode.

At first, I thought this was "Twilight" all over again and wondered how in the heck Archer would get himself back to the 22nd century *this* time.

But the producers (pleasantly) surprised me. I hadn't expected Archer's ruse. It worked.

But I admit I *saw it coming* at the end when Archer again pulled a fast one and got Degra to reveal the secrets of Azati Prime.

Kudos to Randy Oglesby for some fine acting and character development. Also to our star, Scott Bakula. His Archer is coming along almost as nicely as Sisko's did in DS9's third season.

Keep up the good work, B&B!

Did you see, Mayweather had 2 lines! | Report this post to moderator

Wow! At this rate, he'll catch up to any one of the MACOs at least by the end of the season! Poor Anthony... I wonder if they're screwing him over because they can't put together a script for him, or maybe he's just a REALLY bad actor and they give him at least one line each episode just to justify keeping his name in the opening credits. Anyway...

Long live Captain Archer! The guy is proving to be quite an asset to Starfleet. He even had me fooled until Degra was asleep and Archer used the hypo on him. Degra is a great character. It's really neat on how Archer's story seemed to be dead on about the internal struggles within the Xindi Council. When Archer spoke of the Insectoids' treachery, you could see that although he was a little shocked, Degra wasn't too suprised.

There was so much excitement in this episode because you really had no idea what was going to happen next. This is the most original script I think they've come out with since "Carbon Creek." Everybody seemed to be doing something this time around. T'Pol coordinating the operation; Hoshi in the captain's ear; Reed taking command of the bridge; Mayweather... um... Mayweather... oh that's right! Mayweather actually saying something! You got the feeling that they had trained for situations like this back at SF Command.

The fact that there wasn't an entourage of Xindi ships accompanying Degra shows that the Xindi don't seem to be that far off from Terrans in terms of technology and resources. Perhaps that's why they're opting to use a WMD on Earth rather than a conventional attack.

What is it with UPN's promotion department? Although I give them small kudos for masking the aged Archer footage as a "disturbing glimpse of the future," what the hell was all that about T'Pol; "The captain is away, so now she has the ship all to herself." WHAT?!?!?!

All in all, a wonderful outing. I've always liked ENTERPRISE more than most, but this was outstanding.

...that ENT appears to be bringing on its best episodes just as UPN (and Paramount?) are acting as though the series is on its last legs? I wonder if there's any chance in the universe (LOL) that UPN will, at the very least, keep ENT around for another season and, perhaps, even re-up the episode count for this season?

Of course, I understand the ratings have been dismal, especially since Smallville's move (although that doesn't matter where I am since WB and UPN are, believe it or not, on the same station -- ENT doesn't air here until 10 p.m. now). Still, perhaps word of mouth about how good these episodes are getting will help.

Heck -- and dare I ask -- if Berman might still have a job now that these episodes have aired?

While I don't accept the extreme measures Archer is taking to reach his goals, I have to admit they are reasonable measures in the Star Trek universe.

My religious belief prevents me from harming another person even if it means I'll die, and I believe it's up to God to save our world. So, I don't think this episode can be compared with the real world. However, it's no secret that Star Trek has never held much faith in God and this makes the situation plausible. Without any hope for a miraculous protection of Earth; when we are left on our own; Archers mission makes sense and so does his extreme measures. I find it honourable that he decided not to keep or kill Degra and his people.

From a writers point of view, I'm sure this episode is about as realistic as it can get, and it takes a stand on political issues that seems to be constantly topical, in one way or another.

On a sidenote, but something that I think has plagued the ENT series through all it's seasons: I don't understand how it could be so EASY to get onboard the Xindi ship, and how there was enough time to play off the tricks with Degra without a swarm of Xindi ships attacking from all sides. This seems to demonstrate, once again, an incredibly low level of security on the behalf of the Xindi. It also makes me wonder if not the crew on NX-01 will survive anything the writers need them to survive, rather than only survive when it's realistic to survive. Sure, this problem also plagued the VOY series.

This was an awesome episode...and the best part was, the story hadn't been trekked to death by the previous series.

I rather suspected that Deus would like this one, and I wasn't dissappointed. I happen to agree with all points this time out, and can't help wondering if they'll manage to make it three in a row, or fall back to what they've climbed out of with the past two.
