Kes's life as she knows it comes to an end but not before she gives her
crewmates an amazing gift.
Guest Stars:
Shuttle Count: One given away (Season to date: at least 1)
Notes:
- This is Kes's (Jennifer Lien) last episode as a regular on Voyager.
- TV Guide Listing: "Janeway considers bringing the Borg known as
Seven of Nine 'into the fold'. Meanwhile, Tuvok attempts to help
Kes develop her increasing telekinetic and telepathic abilities."
- From TV Guide:
"Star Trek: Voyager fans already know that Kes
will be jettisoned early in the show's fourth season. But executive
producer Jeri Taylor has hinted that this might not be goodbye for
actress Jennifer Lien. In the second episode of the season--the
back half of a two[sic]-parter--Kes "is given a rather magical
send-off, which does not say that she is totally absent forever."
The reason for Kes's departure, Taylor insists, "has nothing to do
with Jennifer Lien and her extraordinary abilities as an actress.
It was simply a decision that we felt that the character was not
working as well as we had wanted. That was more our fault than
Jennifer's."
The Stars Speak:
- [[8/29]] Roxann Dawson:
Jennifer Lien? She didn't quit the show. They're basically
phasing out the character. I think it got stuck into a place where
they couldn't... You all know that Jennifer Lien is leaving the
show? She'll be in the first two episodes and she leaves the show
because... I believe they found that they couldn't do enough with
the character. They really got stuck into a corner and they didn't
know where else to take it. So, instead they decided to bring on a
different character and try to go in a different direction. So
that's what happened with that.
- [[9/17]] Jeri Ryan:
The character I auditioned for was Seven as she is now, in episode
11 that we're shooting... so that preperation was a lot different
than the preperation for the first couple episodes. Which was
basically PANIC! I knew that the character started out Borg, but
all that I had seen was the Borg Queen, who spoke, and who I was
told to completely disregard. And the drones, who didn't speak,
who I was told to completely disregard. So when the first script
came out, and I realized that I actually had to speak and act as a
Borg... panic is a mild term.
- [[9/17]] Jeri Ryan:
It looks like you got rid of most of your Borg "make-up" after
the first show. Is it a relief not to have to wear all of that?
Actually, it was the second episode, but who's counting? :)
It's more comfortable, to say the least.
- [[9/17]] Jeri Ryan:
Do they really have to give you Borg implants? does it hurt?
do they let you remove them in the off season or are they
permanent?
You scare me.
:)
Thanks.
- [[9/17]] Jeri Ryan:
Will you help the Doctor with his hair as he helped you with
yours?
In episode 14 I'll be administering some Borg Rogaine that I
brought on board with me.
- [[9/17]] Jeri Ryan:
My best friend's name is Onica Johansen and she's freaking out
because the new character's name is "Onica Hansen." How'd the name
come about?
We actually loosely based the character on her life. So please
thank her for me.
The Producer's Pen:
- [[8/27]] Jeri Taylor:
[Jennifer Lien] just felt her character wasn't going anywhere, so
it was a very amicable and mutual decision. Jennifer did come back
to do two episodes for us, to finish up the season finale and to
give her a spectuacular story to send her off, which does not
preclude the possibility of her coming back.
We have a lot of characters, we were adding a character and the
feeling was that we were not serving that one well and it was best
not to try keep doing it.
