Notes:

  • An alien race believes that the Voyager crew (except for Neelix and Kes) are related to them.
  • An alien (Voth) paleontologist named Gegen discovers Hogan's remains on that primitive planet where he died (Basics), and discovers that the human DNA supports his theory that the Voth had evolved on another planet before they somehow traveled to their Delta Quadrant homeworld. This Distant Origin theory goes against the doctrines and beliefs of the Voth race, who believe that they were the "First Race" to evolve and originate in the DQ. Gegen and his assistant track down and infiltrate Voyager (the first two acts are from the aliens' viewpoint) to get more evidence, but when they are discovered, Gegen's assistant is wounded and captured by Voyager's officers, and Gegen kidnaps Chakotay. Gegen brings Chakotay to the Voth city-starship (one of the largest starships ever seen on ST) to present him as evidence to the Voth government of his Distant Origin theory. The government officials realize that Gegen's theory may be true after all, but are adamant not to change their race's beliefs, so they continue to coerce Gegen to recant his theory, but he doesn't succumb. The Voth government takes drastic measures and captures Voyager, and tells Gegen that to suppress his proof, they will destroy Voyager and kill Chakotay and all those aboard. Although Chakotay insists to Gegen that there must be another way out, but Gegen realizes that the only way to save the Voyager crew is to recant his theory; Voyager is told to go away and never come back again.
