Guest Stars:

Spellings: "Tuvix"

Notes:

  • Captain's Log, Stardate 49655.2: "Our sensors have located a variety of flower which may prove to be a valuable nutritional supplement. I have send Mr. Neelix and Mr. Tuvok to collect samples."

  • Tuvok appreciates nature.

  • "Oh starless night, of boundless black" is a traditional funeral dirge. It was the most cheerful Vulcan song that Neelix could find.

  • Chief Medical Officer's Log, Supplemental: "Extensive microcellular scans on the merged humanoid have thus far yielded no clues to either a cause or a method of separation."

  • Tuvix possessed "Tuvok's irritating sense of intellectual superiority and Neelix's annoying ebullience".

  • Captain Janeway is as fair-minded as she lovely, according to both Neelix and Tuvix.

  • The orchids that Tuvok had the standard chloroplasts, lysosomal enzymes, itoplasmic proteins.

  • Lysosomal enzymes are often a sign of symbiogenesis, for example, in an Andorian amoeba. Symbiogenetic creatures merge with another species to create an entirely new lifeform.
  • Wednesday is the day that Neelix always cooked A.... crêpes. Tuvix found that the crêpes were a bit too spicy; Kes loves the mushrooms.

  • "The whole is never greater than the sum of its parts" is an axiom that Tuvix is disproving.

  • Chrysanthemum + clemantis + symbiogenetic alien orchid = new weird plant.
New weird plant - chrysanthemum - symbiogenetic alien orchid = structurally unsound (dead) flower.

  • Kes is using Ocampan prayer tapers for Tuvok and Neelix; they are big white candles.

  • Captain's Log, Stardate 49678.4: "It's been two weeks since the transporter accident that created Mr. Tuvix. And while it's still not entirely clear that he's with us permanently, he's been doing his best to settle in. The crew seems to be growing used to his presence, and he's proving to be a very able tactical officer who isn't afraid to express his opinions. While he's forging relationships with many of the officers, he seems to be keeping a respectful distance from Kes, allowing her to adjust to the circumstances on her own terms. As for my relationship with Tuvix, I've found him to be an able advisor, who skillfully uses humor to make his points. And although I feel a bit guilty saying it, his cooking is better than Neelix's. My taste buds are definitely heppy to have him around."

  • This is one of many episodes with a scene in Sandrine's Bar (first seen in "The Cloud").

  • Tuvix refers to the Numirian Inquisition; the Numiri were at war with the Baneans in "Ex Post Facto".

  • Logical fallacy: Both Tuvok and Neelix would willingly give their life for another, yet Capt. Janeway doesn't believe that they would give their lives for Tuvix.

  • Lt. Ayala, the Maquis officer with a five-o'clock shadow, is seen on the Bridge.

  • As the Doctor is held to the Hippocratic Oath to do no harm, he cannot assist in the death of Tuvix.
The Stars Speak:
  • Glenn asks: "The intermeshing of your character and Neelix into Tuvix was quite a provacative moral and ethical problem which was faced by the crew. How did it affect you, the actor, to see your character combined with another?"
Tim Russ responds: "I had the week off.
"I thought the physical appearance of the character was amazing and the actor's portrayal was excellent."
"Symbiogenesis" -- A bizarre occurrence causes Neelix and Tuvok, who are attempting to transport back to Voyager from an away mission, to arrive aboard ship as one. The crew is astonished when a strange but oddly familiar alien humanoid with dark speckled skin and pointy ears--which is neither Tuvok or Neelix--appears. The Doctor's bio-scanner shows that the Neelix and Tuvok's patterns have merged, causing the pair to become one entity--Tuvix--a humor-filled, logic-defying fusion of the two crewmen on "Star Trek: Voyager" airing MONDAY, MAY 6 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET/PT) on UPN.

While Tuvix assimilates and starts to become a valued member of the team, Kes struggles with the fact Neelix may not be part of her life anymore. Meanwhile, the Doctor devises a method to restore Tuvok and Neelix, except for one variable--Tuvix doesn't want to die. When the Doctor, who is programmed to follow certain ethical guidelines, cannot perform the the separation, Janeway is left with a monumental decision.
