To the Death
Production Number: 496
Original air week: 5/13/96
Written by: Ira Steven Behr & Robert Hewitt Wolfe
Directed by: LeVar Burton
Guest Stars:
Spellings: "Weyoun"
Notes:
- Brian Thompson previously played Inglatu in "Rules of Acquisition" and the Klingon Klag in
TNG's "A Matter of Honor".
- Jeffrey Combs previously played Tiron in "Meridian"
and the Ferengi Brunt from "Family Business" and "Bar Association".
- Captain's Log, Stardate 49904.2: "After driving away Breen
privateers from the Bajoran colony of Freehaven, we are returning to
Deep Space Nine."
- Leela Dax has a son, Aujis, who always crawled into bed with Leela and
daddy. Molly is doing the same, probably due to [???].
- The Jem'Hadar stole
microfusion initiators, photonic amplifiers, and EPS power stabilizers.
- Magneton pulses must be the most versatile technobabble ever--they are
emitted from a crashed vessel (cf. "Indiscretion");
they can be used to open a wormhole (cf. "Rejoined"); and now they can be used to hide an ion
trail.
- Transport protocol 5 includes the removal of weapons from the pattern.
- Captain Sisko's phychographic profile is required reading for Vorta field
supervisors.
- The Ikonians (cf. TNG's "Contagion") were around 200,000 years ago.
A gateway, similar to the one the Enterprise found seven years ago, has
been found on Vandras IV.
- The Dominion has existed for at least 2000 years.
- Omet'iklan is "The First" of his group. Toman'tarax is "The Second".
- There were at least 162 rebel Jem'Hadar on Vandras IV.
- A direct hit from a quantum torpedo will not take out a solid neutronium
structure.
- In battle, nothing is certain.
- Nothing keeps Sisko alert like a healthy fear of death.
- The Jem'Hadar have no sleep, no food, no relaxation, no women. Dax
sees that that could make the Jem'Hadar angry.
- Jem'Hadar who reach 20 are considered honored elders.
- Jadzia stopped counting her age at 300.
"You don't look it."
"Thank you." -- Virak'kara and Jadzia Dax.
- "First Omet'iklan, can you vouch for the loyalty of your men?"
"We pledge our loyalty to Founders from now until death."
"Then receive this reward from the Founders, may it keep you strong."
-- Weyoun and Omet'iklan, in the ritual Ketracel White ceremony.
- Toman'torax served under Omet'iklan for three years.
- Miles O'Brien writes a message for Keiko and Molly each time he goes into
battle, "just in case". Jadzia does the same for her mother.
- Jadzia believes that Miles will live to be 140 and die in bed, surrounded
by family and friends.
- "I am First Omet'iklan, and I am dead.
As of this moment, we are all dead.
We go into battle to reclaim our lives.
This we do gladly, for we are Jem'Hadar.
Remember, victory is life."
"Victory is life."
-- Omet'iklan and the others in a Jem'Hadar battle ritual.
- "I am Chief Miles Edward O'Brien. I'm very much alive, and intend
to stay that way."
"Amen."
-- O'Brien and Sisko in a Starfleet battle ritual.
- Ramirez is dead.
- One of the places this gateway goes is to Paris, France, Earth.
- The Jem'Hadar probably never will understand sacrificing onesself for
another.
The Author's Keyboard:
- Robert Hewitt Wolfe:
A subplot about Kira's conflicted loyalties had to be axed from "To
the Death" due to Nana's pregnancy. Hopefully we'll be able to do
something similar in the not too distant future.
- Robert Hewitt Wolfe:
When you do a story, do you create/round out a character with
certain guest stars in mind?
Not really. In almost every case, we create the characters, then
try to find someone to play them. Only a rare occassion (Jeff
Combs as Weyoun for example) do we know who will be playing a
character when we write the role.
- Robert Hewitt Wolfe:
I've been wondering how long it would take for someone to notice the many
similiarities between the Hunters and Tosk and the Jem'Hadar. But the
explanation we had in mind was a little different than yours. All three
are products of Dominion technology and genetic engineering. The Tosk has
many similarities to the Jem'Hadar not because they are from the same
original stock, but because they were both genetically engineered by the
Founders, the Jem'Hadar as soldiers, the Tosk as prey for the Hunters.
Which means the Hunters are... surprise... part of the Dominion. In my
opinion, Hunters serve as navigators/trackers on Dominion ships. We were
supposed to see one operating in that capacity in "To the Death," but it
didn't work out. Maybe some day we'll be able to pull it off.
