For the millionth time, it's Maquis not Marquis. The Marquis
were French... the Maquis were not.
Err... the original Maquis (big "M") were about as French as you
can get. They were a French underground organization that fought
the German occupation forces in World War II. (A member was called
a Maquisard) I believe they took their name from the word maquis
(little "m"), French for a type of dense growth of trees and shrubs
found in Mediterranean climates.
