Koerner: Dear Bradley, how did you and David come to be involved in DS9? I first recall seeing your names on Season 5's "The Assignment". What led to your string of teleplay commisions, and subsequently your staff positions? Was it a spec script, a pitch session that went well, a good agent? I am an aspiring writer myself... Dear Gabriel -- persistence and luck were the keys. We sold our first story to Ira in season 4, "Rules of Engagement". But that came about because Ira is a Sam Peckinpah fan, and David had written a wonderful biography, called "If they move, kill 'em". Ira liked the book and invited him to tour the studio. David saw an opportunity and asked if he could pitch the show -- then brought me in. From "Rules" we got an agent who told us to write a one-hour spec script. We did for X-files. Ira read it and gave us a shot at the teleplay. * Interesting route. We are chatting with DS9 Writer/Executive Story Editor Bradley Thompson. Please send any questions you have for Mr. Thompson to me or StevePerr. (I'm a Sam Peckinpah fan - I should prolly check that book out) The teleplay was "The Assignment." They were pleased with the results, and the subsequent "Business as Usual." When Robert decided to leave, there was an open slot and they asked us.* to this day "The Assignment" is the one episode I haven't seen. They never seem to rerun it. David's book is great, by the way. Do check it out. David knows Sam's family, and got the inside scoop on a lot of stuff. From scoopguy: Mr. Thompson, what kind of device is Mr. Rick Berman using to keep you silent? A rusty spoon or some post-apocalyptic device known as the "Gouger"? If you saw the outrageously expensive Wild Bunch laser, david has an essay in it. Ok, I'll answer the question -- Romulan Neurocellular scanners. Ron Moore put it quite well when he said that we're telling the story the best way we know how -- and that includes leaving you in suspense. * that was quick... you must glide right through those times when you have to come up with some sort of technobabble Yeah -- they only want me for my tech. So DS9 will burn. :-) Moving on... From Josh: Bradley, I was just wondering. Did you and David come up with the initial idea for "Inquisition", and if so, did you go back and research all the questionable things that Bashir had done before you brought the story out? BTW.. LOVED "Treachery, Faith and the Great River"! Inquisition came off a pitch in which Bashir got a parking ticket for his runabout that he left in orbit. That pitch came from Jeff Slevlowitz (sp?). It sparked a conversation that it was silly for him to have done so? (at a Tai restaurant) turned into Khafka's the trial and thence into "Inquisition." Schlevolwiz? couldn't help ya with that one Anyway, once the idea bounced around all of us, we ended up with a delightful but unshootable first draft that we went back with Rene to build into what you saw. Loved that show. We did go back once we had the idea and spun all of Bashir's more questionable acts with the most paranoid interpretation. * From Arman: Can you tell us who wrote the final episode? Please?! Oh, it's gotta be Behr and Beimler The final episode is being written by Ira & Hans. Rene & Ron are doing show #24. We'll probably all have a few words in the final piece somewhere.* From Karim: I would like to ask you about your impressions on the final episodes of ds9, can you say that they are the best episodes written for the show? Also is it true that there is still a Ferengi episode? The ferengi do figure in these last ten. * Everyone has their own favorites, their own idea of "best". * From DilberTrek: What, if any, significance does the "31" in "Section 31" have? Or was it just a random number? I never asked Ira or Hans about that. I don't know where they got it. I assumed it was because Section thirty-one was mentioned in paragraph 31 of some obscure charter. * From BrerMike: Does the tenacity of the fans and their sometimes obsessive opinions on yours or the other writers work, ever offend you or affect your creativity? BTW - Kudos on an excellent television show! Thanks for the Kudos and of course we get horribly offended when someone doesn't like our stuff. David has been known to go into a psychotic rage and punch refrigerators when angered. :-) Regarding creativity -- actually, the worst critics of our work are our fellow writers on the show. But they're all trying to make the show better, so when they hate your work, you just suck it up and move on. And plan revenge.* Mental image... Ira: Hey Brad, this really sucks! Been there too many times...* From Jose Gonzalez: Bradley, you and the writing staff pretty much promised the audience that "the best was yet to come" at the end of "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang." Nearing the finish line as you are, are you as confident (or more confident) that this is still the case? Yep.* You're in for some real twisted things -- stuff we never thought we'd see. It's called something else. * LOL From Sol System: Is the focus for the final arc a local one, or will there be an emphasis on the more...galactic nature of the war itself? Eclipse has also been retitled.* (we know) (or so we think we do) We're going to try to cover all the bases except the Delta Quadrant.* Would ya look at this.. what timing... From ChiefOps: Some sources report that the next three episodes are "Penumbra", "Umbra", and "Eclipse", but others say they changed to "Penumbra", "Till Death Do Us Part", and "Strange Bedfellows". Which is correct, and why the change if there was one? Brad: which do you think is correct? :-) LOL, we're going to torture *one* title out of you before it is over with The changes were made because when we wrote first drafts on those shows, we were headed to a place where those titles made sense. But as they deveoped, we realized that events had to be moved up or pushed back, and the titles were no longer appropriate. And everyone hated Umbra, anyway -- and too many people in Post production were getting confused. It was ugly, with gnashing of teeth and wailing and rending of raiment. * Brad, did you submit the question about the Sam Peckinpah? It was submitted by, "Brad," and amazingly you mentioned it already... just curious. That wasn't me. I tend to use "Bradley" or -B more often than Brad. If I'd submitted it to me, I'd already know the answer, wouldn't I? * (someone sent in a question asking if the author of the book Bradley mentioned earlier was the same David Weddle we all know) Absolutely the same David Weddle. Though I don't get any money for the book -- I don't see why I'm plugging it here. * You will see my name as a credit for the author's photo, though. David wanted me to use the name Raven, but I thought that was a little much.* From Beefies: I had the chance to pitch to Rene E. and Robert Wolfe several times and enjoyed it very much. But I'm interested in how open you feel the staff really was to outside ideas and how strong the "not invented here" effect is. For example, I pitched "Time's Orphans" three years before it aired. I'm not claiming I was ripped off; I'm wondering if you think an idea that sounds awful coming from an unknown freelancer can suddenly seem brilliant when it arises in-house? Or am I just full of hot air and sour grapes? Let me get to Mr. Beefies question. Time's orphan was pitched by Joe Menosky as a Next Generation show. We generally go with the earliest pitch when we have similar ideas. DS9 is really difficult show to pitch -- the effect you mentioned has very little impact. The problem is, people pitching can only go by what's aired -- which is usually months behind what's being written. I've had a lot of Ziyal shows pitched when she'd been dead for three episodes, but of course, nobody could know that because they hadn't aired. As far as who the idea comes from -- it's more like what are we in the mood to hear at any given moment. One Little Ship was a show that Rene tried pitching to Next Gen, DS9 (Ira turned him down absolutely) and even Voyager turned it down. Then Hans brought it up again at the right moment. * From CharlesCapps: Much of the online community feels that season seven has not quite lived up to expectations. What are your feelings on this reaction, and what do you feel as far as these expectations? Has season seven lived up to what it should be? We are chatting with Bradley Thompson. Aside -- yes, Nana/Nicole was a sight for all of us -- especially when it was uncut and done several times. Back to the question of captain on the bridge -- damn you. :-) Voyager does that -- and we do like dealing with the problems of command. Rules of Engagement was a story that dealt with that and we enjoyed it. As far as not having written a Kirk show -- I'm not dead yet. * but he is. I don't know maybe its just me, but I thought it was kind of forced. Didn't have the same impact as when we first saw Dax and her former husband kiss in season 4. We thought the reasons for doing the shows were valid, and to be honest we liked the idea of little stories within this huge canvas. Whether or not they appealed to everyone -- just hope we pleased enough for the series to go into syndication. Hmm, maybe would've worked better had they been "littler stories" (just kidding) As far as regrets go -- we did find ourselves trying to cram too much story into the last ten and some elements had to go.
